Why do I own 1911s? I think they're mechanical works of art, insanely accurate, as reliable as plastic, and just plain fun. I don't buy cheap ones (under $1000) though. Not that there aren't plenty of good options under a grand, just none I've been interested in.

Why do I carry a 1911? Main reason is hand size. If I'm carrying a Glock for instance the largest caliber my hand fits is Gen4 .40 and even that's not ideal. Stepping into a single-stack let's me go up to .45. My accuracy and speed is best with a 1911 so that's a significant factor as well.

On any given day you can also find me carrying a Glock 23, Beretta/Wilson 92 Brig Tac, M&P9 compact, Ruger LCR, and/or a Bodyguard .380, depending on the circumstances.

People are inherently lazy and want things done yesterday and don't want to take time working on things. I know I'm generalizing but it's also a matter of convenience for a lot of people. We can pick up any latest and greatest from Glock, S&W, H&K, ect and the guns are generally reliable out of the box and need little maintenance for the average shooter and any work they might need are usually drop in parts that anyone can do.

Now take a 1911, it requires a little more knowledge and understanding of what's occurring and most parts require fitting and adjustment. Most people don't want to spend time tinkering or messing with it or even worse, pay someone to fix an issue and would rather spend time putting rounds down range.

Like AR's, there are 1911's from "the list" to buy and avoid and find that the modern day 1911 is extremely reliable with the right owner.

From a CC standpoint, we all have different requirements but for the average person I do not think the magazine capacity is limiting, especially if one carries an extra mag.

This is my thinking as well. Thanks for articulating this well.

I've used this quote quite often when referring to the 1911 vs. 21st Century wonder gun.

CCW 1911s daily for a decade or so, took courses with them, IDPA, etc. I was very much a fan. I don't anymore due to practical considerations: the terminals ballistics between the .45 ACP and 9mm is now minimal, more ammo in a single mag in a double stack 9mm vsm the 1911 + mag, ergos of some polymer pistols almost as good (M&P was finally the pistol that had me jump ship as it was for many other dedicated 1911 shooters due in large part to the 1911-like ergo), minimal maintenance, lower cost of ammo, and triggers in some polymer striker fired pistols while nothing as good as a 1911, good enough for my recs/needs, and the fact you can own 3-5 polymer pistols for the cost of one good 1911...

Hence, other than an obvious love of the history, looks, cool factor, etc, I couldn't justify the 1911 for me. I still love them, but love them like a 60s muscle car vs what I actually wanna drive due to more pragmatic considerations.

I miss my 1911s, just not enough to ignore the above pragmatic considerations.

Being old enough to remember when.
It used to be unless you were carrying a revolver in .357, well you were just under gunned.
Then 1911's and ammo were being built that made them, just that much better. Those flying ash trays would chamber every time.
Then the Nine -vs- Forty Five argument.
The 9 mm ammo started being beefed up and the edge between the 9 and the 45 began to close

Here is the thing. Each has an intended purpose until that purpose no longer exists, once that happens it is gone.
I have three 9 mm Glocks and One 1911, that 1911 has a niche and when Glocks can fill it, it will no longer be carried.

EDC a government with two spare mags or a G19 with one spare mag. I don't feel under gunned with either...taking into account they're both handguns.

Right tool for the right job. The 1911 is an outstanding handgun and is great at many different carrying applications. So are many other handguns. They each have their own faults or limitations. Find what works best for you and drive on. If a guy is dead on accurate and on top of his game with a Beretta 92F, should he switch to a HK P30 because it is newer and lighter? Guys in the Army/MARSOC/Force Recon are using 1911s TODAY downrange against enemies of this country, law enforcement are carrying 1911s TODAY keeping us safe and a plethora of private citizens are carry 1911s today to watch over themselves and their families. Carry a reliable/accurate handgun that works for your application and let guys who argue over tools be just that....tools.

I am waiting for the next 2-3 years to play out. The US Military, DHS and the FBI are all looking for new handguns. At this time, it looks like Glocks are falling by the wayside to Sigs and S&W offerings. Will people dump their G17s and G19s (both designed 20+ years ago=old) for Sig P320s and S&W M&Ps???

I can't find any gun that I can shoot as fast, accurately. Besides having an excellent base design, the gun has a hundred years of evolution that has made the gun unmatched, in my opinion, by and other design. The combination of perfect ergonomics, lightweight trigger, long sight radius, and substantial heft makes the gun the perfect shooting gun.
If you aren't armed when you take a dump in your own home then your opinion on what is a practical daily carry weapon isn't interesting to me.

I really have to second Greg Bell's comments. I have not found another handgun that I can run as well and as accurately as the 1911. It is not the fact that I don't train on other platforms, in fact I have more time on Sigs than anything else. Even with all of the time on the Sig, I would carry the 1911 over it in a heartbeat.

Right now, I am 8 months in to transitioning from the Sig to the G17. I had shot the Sig for 6+ years and then got a chance to do some training on the G17. I shot the G17 in a tighter group than my sidearm of 6+ years. Time to change. It is not the fact that the Sig was bad, it was the fact that I personally ran the G17 better. Other guys results are different and some stayed with the Sig and others moved to the G17. Certain platforms are better options for different shooters, there are no "wrong" answers as long as it is reliable/accurate.

My personal 1911 has spent plenty of time on government ranges either being shot by me or fellow co-workers. Guys are always asking can we get THIS. These are guys who have plenty of "modern" choices available to them. Sig 226/229, Glock 17/19/26 and several HKs. Most of the guys have no idea what the model is. They just know it is a good tool for them and their application of it. It is a tool that is not for everyone but if it is the one you run the best then load up your mags and get training.

I keep going back and fourth with my carry pistol. G19 or 38 Super Professional. Both great pistols have a role and both do it very well, still a coin toss for me.
