Of course a 1911 is a fine EDC choice for some. Reminds me of a recent conversation in which I was reminded of an old saying. "It's the Indian, not the arrow." A person should carry the weapon they are most proficient with. Whether that's a 1911 or whatever is irrelevant.

Attend a match and watch production style, 8 round mag, 45 acp 1911's whoop up on the majority of the wonder 9's that have twice the ammo capacity. It's not the 1911 being magical or the wonder 9 being cursed. It's the individual running it.

It doesn't matter how fast a person shoots or how tactical and 2016 they look if they can't hit jack.

I work best with a 1911, therefore that's what I EDC. One in the pipe plus 8 round flush mag with a 10 rounder for a reload.

I agree with the two posts above. I too have the other stuff but at the end of the day I always go back to my 1911's.

"An elegant weapon, for a more civilized age"

I don't feel under gunned in the least with a 25 year old Springfield Loaded and an extra eight round magazine. It has jammed maybe five times in thousands of rounds, usually ammo related. The gun will shoot smaller groups than I can and make hits on torso steel targets at 100 yards with good ammo.

Keep clean, replace the recoil spring every few years and live happily ever after.

I like my 1911, but I am faster and more precise with my Beretta or USP.

I would not hesitate to carry the 1911 if needed, but there are better options available to me that i am more proficient with. My 5 shot LCR is on me the most at any rate simply because it can be carried with the least amount of inconvenience.

I shoot my 1911 better then my other handguns (likely the trigger) and find the single stack design carries easier IWB then double stacks do. I can't speak for all 1911's but I have had mine for about 5 years and with around 2k rounds through it and have had no issues. It is a box stock Springfield MC Operator which certainly isn't a high dollar custom. I am a fan of the .45 acp round and don't feel handicapped by the lower capacity as single stack mags pack easy. I don't go looking for trouble off duty and don't feel the need to have a g17 with 3 33 round mags just to pick up some groceries.

I'm not knocking the polymer framed pistols out there as I have several and carry a g22 on duty that I am happy with. My point simply is there is still a place for the 1911 in today's world.

I carry a 1911 because I like it. Because it conceals well, comfortably, and fairly easily. Because the weight doesn't bother me - in fact, I like to have the weight when I'm shooting it.

I don't baby my 1911, but I don't abuse it, either. I'm not a CIA SAD operator in Bumfuk, Shitstainistan. I'm not a Delta guy or an HRT guy doing hostage rescue in linear environments where the fight is over in six seconds and you're either victorious or dead.

The 1911 I bought I bought because it comes from a company with a reputation for building reliable, accurate, quality firearms. I bought it because if something goes sideways with it, they will fix it for me, so I don't need to be my own armorer.

I also have Glocks - but they have a different mission: One wears an X300U and 22-round magazines, ready to deal with bumps in the night; the other one is set-up with an XC-1, ready to take over for either the big Glock or the 1911. And I know enough about the Glocks to be able to keep them cared for and fed.

Would I take my 1911 on a year-long deployment to exotic places with interesting people who want to kill me? Probably not. But for my relatively serene domesticated life, I have no reason not to believe that my 1911 and its 25 230-grain friends would be up to the task of defending my community, my family, or myself from 99.9% of all malicious threats. The only problems I might not be able to solve with my 1911 I probably wouldn't be able to solve with a G19 or any other handgun.

I try not to overthink it. If the 1911's profile, trigger, and appeal meet your criteria, drive on with it. On occasion I will carry or shoot a double stack something or another, but I like the 1911's profile, and already have enough vested in 1911s from the standpoint of time, training, and knowledge to enjoy the benefits unique to the platform. In my mind, it is very important to make hits on demand, so that is a big factor.

I've been spending a lot of time with Glocks lately to try and bridge the gap between them and my 1911s, but I'm about 20% behind with them during drills. And even once I get within 5% on drills using a double stack whatever, the carrying profile aka concealability and comfort of carry is a big factor.

It doesn't help that 1911s were my first pistol platform, but if everything I owned went up in smoke, I'd probably buy a couple G19s and call it good for now. But I see no reason to step backwards in my CCW criteria from 1911s I already own. Your mileage may vary, and rightfully so.

I have owned probably 15 1911's over the years and can shoot them relatively competently but am down to one. I grew up back when the choices in pistols were 90% 1911 or revolver (glocks were not even invented until I was in college) and despite even earning a pistol distinguished badge ( earned with a beretta) I still can't shoot a 1911 as well as a lot of more modern pistols or my revolvers. I still have enough confidence in one to carry from time to time, but it has never been my top choice for much of anything.

Are we including .40 2011's in this analysis? No capacity limitation vs "modern" double stack guns and all the perks of 1911 ergonomics and trigger. The guys I see in USPSA and 3 gun really rip it up with 2011's, making most guys with polymer striker fired stuff look really second rate. Of course now with that we are almost always talking $1500-2000+ and guys who do 2-3 matches a month and spend more on match fees and ammo, even after reloading savings, than some cars.

I used to carry a 1911 because I liked 'em. I'm a fair hand at fixing them too. At one time I had the tools (and know-how) to fix just about anything that went wrong with 'em, which was nothing once they were built/set-up correctly. I learned a lot from LAV and Hilton Yam and my 1911s were stone-cold reliable and I still think they were more reliable than the Glocks I carry now.

    I'm back to Glocks because:

    1) A 5" steel 1911 is just too big and too heavy to comfortably/realistically carry concealed for me. I get some sciatic pain from carrying strong side, especially IWB and 1911s just don't carry AIWB very well at all for me. I've killed stuff with 9mm and 45 and I'm not really a 45 guy. Good 9mm is impressive. I can carry a Glock 17 or 17 cut for 19 mags much easier in the appendix position and they weigh significantly less. The Glock 43 is damn near what a 1911 is as far as capacity. Think about it....

    2) I can NOT run a 1911 as well as I can a Glock. I started out on Glocks back in the late '90s and they are what I'm the most comfortable with. Even after much time dedicated to other guns, I can come back to a Glock and instantly improve my shooting.
