I have always been a hardcore .45acp. Big, slow and clumsy was my middle name so me and Glock21 or Smith 45 were my weapons of choice for duty carry since 1993. In 2008, Admin changed and allowed 1911 carry, so Springer MCOP was my choice and it ran good and eventually peppered to taste but more cosmetic as the internals were basically the same as started (except for tool steel action components).

Also, I am person who has been hard on my body and a 2013 Travis Haley high round count class for days caused pain to my wrist and elbow that I have been slowly feeling throughout the years finally sparked the pain that I had to back off. I switched to G19 and our dept is slowly transiting to 9mm. I have since purchased a Custom Carry Nina and a Springer RO OP 9mm that is having some minor teething issues (extraction and low trigger break) out of the box but I am trying to fix myself to gain knowledge for the learning process. We will be going to G17/19 but I will mix between that and my RO OP9.

As an instructor, I am a believer that my proficiency has to be higher than most and running both systems at a higher level is my goal. While I feel my Glock shooting is faster paced, my 1911 shooter is a tad slower but the accuracy potential is much higher. Don't get me wrong, my 45 MCOP is still a shooter, but if I get the opportunity to go to a 1000 rounds school, I will be grabbing a 1911 9mm these days. My CC9 is the shhhhhhhhttttt!

this guy will eventually take the roll of my duty weapon when we are full on 9mm.

but in the mean time, I will also switch to issued G19 or personal G17 from time to time

I don't see 1911's as being very much of a viable modern service pistol. I don't see any reason for someone who's willing to put the time in to learn the platform completely not to concealed carry one, but it just flat out isn't as good of a fighting pistol for the masses as a Glock or insert other modern 9mm. Low magazine capacity, high maintenance factor, and the need to learn what's a pretty complicated system compared to the alternatives. I love the way a 1911 feels in my hands, I love how it carries, and I love how well I shoot them, so I'm by no means a hater. I love the 1911 for what it is, but I also understand what it isn't.

I think this seems to be the consensus, but it doesn't have much to do with it being a viable self-defense/CCW tool. I think what does apply is if the user has a reliable example and can live with its other attributes ie. limited capacity, etc.

    I wouldn't carry a 9mm 1911 on a dare.

    They can work pretty well.

I don't get the high maintenance part - swap a recoil spring and throw a little oil on it. Or complicated? Not too many parts in a 1911.

You're correct on the reduce mag cap. It shoots bullets where it needs to go, training takes care of the rest.

I think most would agree that the "average" 1911 is far more finicky than your "average" modern semi auto. I know know that there are many, many higher end 1911s that have Glock like, ultra boring reliability, but that's really not the average 1911. Even my TRP has hiccups occasionally, although it is a fantastic pistol.

The 1911 is a far more complicated system, it has not one, but two manual safeties and a hammer. There are more things just right there that can go wrong than in an entire glock lol.

Just simply put, if you give new shooters who need a pistol to fight with a G19 and a 1911 and the same amount of training and ammunition, my money is that they'll be far more effective with the G19. Especially in the long run when it comes to maintaining the pistol over its life of service.

If it makes you feel good, by all means carry a 1911. It's a really fun platform and if you're dedicated you can be really, really good with it. All I'm saying is if I had the choice and had to go to the shootout at the OK corral with one of the two the easy choice is the G19.

I've got two 1911s in my carry rotation and both were over $1500 plus one has some custom trigger work done to it. I've never had any real issues that would make me question reliability in either of them and I've carried both confidently. The biggest things I have personally found are that quality magazines, and quality lubricant go a long way. Go cheap in either of those things and you may end up regretting it. I use Wilson Combat magazines and Fire Clean lubricant.

I've also been mulling over the idea of sending my wife's SA LW Champion RO to the SACS for some work. It would basically be the cost of the gun to get done what she wants and I'm wondering if it would be worth it.

Anyway... All that being said, I carry my Glock 19 G4 more than anything these days. 15 rounds and throw a spare mag in my pocket and I'm out the door. I also have a Sig 938 in my occasional rotation but it is my least favorite even though I can shoot it well. The longer I've been carrying the more I have a distaste for micros and super sub compact carry pistols. A Glock 19 is easy enough to conceal for most and honestly I don't give a hoot if it prints a little.

They aren't the same thing. And Fire Clean works better than any other lubricant I've ever tried.
