    SAR2 Threading Question

I was going to try my hand at the threading kit for a SAR 2 in 5.45. Im not a purist, so wouldn’t the AR15 threading kit work for installing RH flash hiders on a 74? Is barrel diameter close enough?

The "correct" thread for the AIMS-74 is M22x1.5RH. Whether you do that or 1/2x28RH is up to you. If you have a working detent in the front sight or will add one, then I'd recommend sticking with the original. If you're going to have to use a peel washer to time the flash hider, then I'd go with the AR15 threading. The bigger issue is whether or not the outside diameter of the barrel at the muzzle is correct or not. If there's not enough meat, you're out of luck. If there's too much, you can use an annular cutter to get it down to the correct diameter. Carolina Shooters Supply sells them.

Unless you find an authentic Romanian FSB, you are going to have a difficult time getting Romy 22x1.5 threads on your SAR. Remember that on 74 type rifles it's actually an extension on the FSB that has the threads, not the muzzle itself. Any 22x1.5 or 24x1.5 muzzle devices you find are going to be sized to fit over this threaded extension.

This is what I did with my SAR-2:
I threaded it for the 1/2x28mm pitch.
    I bought this:

and a specific CNC Warrior jam nut model that they don't seem to sell any more...by some bizarre stroke of luck the OD of the jam nut was virtually identical to the adapter.
I installed the plunger pin and spring, threaded on the adapter, then the jam nut, and staked it in place, creating a fair facsimile of an AK-74 FSB that allows me to use 24x1.5 muzzle devices.

This may help as well - it is a press on part that he can custom size to your barrel measurements, as the SAR barrels can vary (which I have verified myself):

Take some time, get a 22mm front sight block. Chris Butler sells the correct 22mm flash hiders. You can dig around and find the sidefolding stock. Mags, you might get away with some Polish 74 steel ones.
