It's unlikely that you're fast cycling and failing to lock back unless your mag follower is really slow, so I doubt more mass would be the answer. Where and how far are your empties ejecting?

To go lighter, you'd have to go gamer with a TACCOM buffer or take weights out and replace with nylon or delrin rod sections. Not sure what your intended use is, and how comfortable you'd be with either of those solutions.

If it is indeed leakage, it usually gets better with carboning up, but YMMV.

Fortunately, this is not my duty rifle, but I also desire something that I can trust... And right now, I can't.
Empties are ejecting at 4:00 I think. I can check tomorrow.
Carboning might help, but that's not enough for me. The more I think about it, the more I think that up sizing the port slightly will help. I just can't think of anything else really.

If they're coming out just a few feet away and at 4, and it's not locking back, and it locked back before, with full power .308/same as before, and now everything is lined up--yeah, I think it's port time if it were mine.

Only other last thing to maybe try first would be to machine down the original block to fit under the MI to see if that helped, but probably not worth the squeeze.

I thought about that, but there's no way that the side screw style block would fit... It's narrow in there!
Now to figure out the proper size to go with... Is there a rule of thumb? Like "try .008 more than what it currently is" or something?
    Thanks for the help

Update: problem solved since the gas port was opened from .067 to .073. This is the second time within less than 2 months that a custom rifle project of mine has had functioning issues that were caused by gas ports that were undersized.
    Thanks for the help guys.

This thing came through my class in GA recently. It wasn't officially brought in, one of the officers asked to bring as it belonged to a neighbor and wasn't working. A few things that were discovered.

    1. 16" barrel with carbine gas system and .063 gas port. I'm not an AR10 expert, but I know it's too small.

    2. Aluminum gas block that isn't aligned properly.

    3. Cutting the gas tube down for customized fit isn't going to help.

That's going to need a MUCH bigger gas port.

Hacksaw. My guess is that it was the wrong length and someone didn't understand you don't just cut them down. I quit trying to figure out why everyone is a self proclaimed AR expert.
