Gee, I think I made a positive suggestion back in post 17 for kind of a hard scabbard.
"Personally, I'd build a custom box, that is only open on one end and put a hinged door on it so I could pull the rifle out fast. And then I'd mount it where I could grab the rifle quickly from outside the vehicle. Some 3/4 pine, glue and some finishing nails would probably do it. Unless you want to put felt on the interior."
Having thought about it a little more you could make the exterior of the box thinner by using some aluminum flashing (comes in rolls), or by using 1/4" plywood on the sides screwed and glued to a 2x4 frame (1.5"x3.5") cut to 1.5" X 3". (If you use aluminum you'd have to strengthen the open end with an exterior brace.) Close the other end with a piece of canvas with Velcro or what ever to keep out the dust.
If you use 20 round magazines the interior would need to be 10 1/4" x 3" X (Length of AR), if you drive with it loaded.
Think of it as a scabbard like a cowboy might have on the side of his horse except it encloses nearly the entire rifle except where a canvas cover goes over just the end of the butt stock to keep out the dust.
Your whole rifle would then be protected. You'd just rip the canvas open grab the rifle by the butt stock and pull it out of the can, no excessive dust in the action, barrel, or on the optic. Down side is you'd have to use less than a 30 round magazine and it would take up some space some where. Bolted to a roll bar, behind a seat laying side ways. Hell, mount it to the hood.
If I were doing what you do, I'd come up with some type of scabbard.
