Gee, I think I made a positive suggestion back in post 17 for kind of a hard scabbard.

"Personally, I'd build a custom box, that is only open on one end and put a hinged door on it so I could pull the rifle out fast. And then I'd mount it where I could grab the rifle quickly from outside the vehicle. Some 3/4 pine, glue and some finishing nails would probably do it. Unless you want to put felt on the interior."

Having thought about it a little more you could make the exterior of the box thinner by using some aluminum flashing (comes in rolls), or by using 1/4" plywood on the sides screwed and glued to a 2x4 frame (1.5"x3.5") cut to 1.5" X 3". (If you use aluminum you'd have to strengthen the open end with an exterior brace.) Close the other end with a piece of canvas with Velcro or what ever to keep out the dust.

If you use 20 round magazines the interior would need to be 10 1/4" x 3" X (Length of AR), if you drive with it loaded.

Think of it as a scabbard like a cowboy might have on the side of his horse except it encloses nearly the entire rifle except where a canvas cover goes over just the end of the butt stock to keep out the dust.

Your whole rifle would then be protected. You'd just rip the canvas open grab the rifle by the butt stock and pull it out of the can, no excessive dust in the action, barrel, or on the optic. Down side is you'd have to use less than a 30 round magazine and it would take up some space some where. Bolted to a roll bar, behind a seat laying side ways. Hell, mount it to the hood.

If I were doing what you do, I'd come up with some type of scabbard.

    The scabbard idea has merit.

The downside in my application would be skinning it out quick enough to engage a hightailing coyote.

I recommend buying a neoprene elbow wrap and some strong thread. Sew it to fit over your optic snugly. Quick on, quick off and gives a small level of cushioning against impact.

Is that like wet suit material? Because that would be good.

    MRO Lens Cover(S)?

Yes, but you can pick up a set of elbow pads for less than $10
Mueller Elbow Sleeve, Neoprene, Black, Small https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0013IZI1Y..._MLwcxbEGY2Q9K

All depends on where you mount it. I started thinking last night about having a Kydex or Boltaron scabbard made that could be attached to a backpack. Or the back of a seat..

Continuing to think about it, the scabbard only needs to extend a little past the end of the receiver where the buffer tube attaches to the lower, because that would put it past the optic. Keeping the dust out would require a rag stuffed into the top of the scabbard around the buffer tube (or stock if its an A2 stock) or a Velcro/snap canvas enclosure.

You'd probably have to clean the optic once it a while anyway, but nothing like you do now.

If you are interested in the scabbard idea I would suggest you build a simple one out if 1/4" plywood and some 2x4s cut to 1.5x3. Make it sort of triangle shaped like a gun case so it just comes up past the receiver and try it out before spending money on a custom Boltaron scabbard or something.

I have a couple more ideas but they are just variations on the theme, so I'll not mention them now.
