Well I've heard of the theory that plants can and do feel pain, but could there be studies out there trying to prove it? I guess so.
You see the overwhelming flaw of the entire "vegan" scene is, they don't want to harm a living creature (ie things with eyes I guess) to survive. Well if you take a step back and look at the world, that some believe was formed by a divine plan, that is the very basis if life. To have life, is to have death. It sucks, but its just how the planet works.
I grew up Vegetarian for the first decade or so of my life. It was influenced by the health message of the church my parents belonged to (Seventh Day Adventist). Although, if you know anything of them, being a vegetarian is encouraged, but certainly not mandatory, and this differs by region, and culture (Filipino SDA churches are certainly not veg.)
That said, I later in life became an atheist, and eat all manner of meat. My teeth are shaped to allow me to eat plants, and meat, and my digestive tract is similarly structured. I was meant to eat both, and in moderation, at that.
I think moderation is a great approach to many things in life, and what you put in your body, is certainly one of those things. Many health studies on the SDA church and its members show roughly a 7year longer life expectancy, however, the church also teaches temperance in smoking and drinking, as well, and to be honest, I truly did note that very very very few church member smoked at any church I attended that was SDA. Some drank, but hardly any smoked. Huge impact.
I did also note a few members go vegan, who previously ate rather "liberally" of meat. They were a couple. One was a teacher/wife type, and one was a mechanic. The mechanic and teacher both lost weight. However, the teacher began to look healthy and trim, while the mechanic took on more of a skinny/sickly look. I suspect they both lost significant strength, although they claimed they felt better. The other case study is a girl I dated while in the church. Her whole family was vegetarian. I noted no positive results, as she was overweight, as was her mother (not greatly, but lacking muscle mass and over-fat, for sure), and the father, while strong no doubt, also carried a bit of a stomach (not much, I'd call him "typical active Dad"). The younger siblings were not very strong, but looked rather typical.
In short, I feel that "vegetarian" means zip. You can still eat a ton of crap that will make you look and perform like crap.
Another case study is my father, who ate plenty of crap, as he escorted trucks. He had a heart-cath performed about 5 years ago, and it was perfect. Flawless.
My point? Individuals as well as moderation are worth more consideration than any sort of "dietary rules".
However, you will never find a big vegan bodybuilder. They may be strong, fast, ripped, but they aren't big (in comparison). Period. End of story.
I would also like to supply this handy video detailing how to become a vegetarian, if it interests any of you:

Humans are omnivores period. There's no debate what so ever in the sci/med community of that. Every claim made otherwise was debunked a long time ago, but often repeated by those with serious cognitive dissonance who wish to support their beliefs vs what we know of human physiology. If people wish to be vegans due to moral/religious reasons that's their biz, if they are doing it due to some belief "humans are not meant to eat meat" nonsense, than they are incorrect period.

WS6,
That video was pretty damn funny. I will recommend it to Son of Commander Paisley.
