Pistol Accuracy Thread

This thread is to post offhand pistol groups, preferably 25 or 50yds groups on a b8 (but doesn't have to be), and to discuss what you've done to improve your accuracy. 10 shot groups prefered.

Im getting back into pistol shooting after some distractions for a few months. I quickly found that my skills greatly deminished, to the point I could hit a 3x5 at 25yds 2 out of 10 shots.

I found I was sinking too much finger on the trigger. This caused round to go left and high (I don't know why).

After revisit the basics and re discovering the finger placement, I shot this. Not great, probably not good, but it's much closer to where I was a year or so ago. The horizontal stringing is clearly me, possibly due to sights.

I don't have any target examples but I will say that this has happened and does happen to me for various reasons. If I haven't shot in a while or I swap to a different pistol or if the trigger weight and feel has changed, lighter or heavier.

I've discovered that if I spend some time dry firing the night before I head to the range, I'll shoot much better. When dry firing I'll watch the front sight like a hawk and if I see any wiggle or twitching in the front sight, I'll adjust my grip a little by applying small amounts of pressure here and there until it stops moving. Then I'll dry fire several times with that grip. I'll put the pistol down, pick it up, dry fire. Draw from a holster and dry fire. I'll repeat this until I feel like it's natural. Then on range day I'm shooting great!

Again this only happens if I haven't shot in a while or if I'm shooting something different or I've modified the trigger.

Edit: When adjusting my grip while dry firing; like you, I've discovered too much or too little trigger finger placement can make a difference. I'll adjust accordingly.

I do have a couple pictures as I was curious myself.

This first one is one of the best. I've always shot my USP45 well. It's a Custom Combat and came with Novak fiber optic sights from the factory. This is a group at 25 yards (12 rounds):



Next is my Glock 17 "build." Also has a FO front sight (Warrens). It also has a Zev trigger and a Wilson Combat barrel, which probably doesn't hurt (15 rounds).



Last is my Sig 226 SAO. I love this pistol as well. One of my better 25 yard groups (10 rounds):

This was done at 50 ft, one handed. USP9 with standard sights, running 124gr hollow points from Rocky Mountain Reloading.

I shoot a monthly LEO only accuracy match using a semi auto and a 4" revolver for points. The rules are somewhat stretched as its supposed to be duty weapons but one shooter uses a SW PPC 9. Wadcutter ammo is allowed.

it is 50 rounds, all point shoulder (no barricade) and timed on a B27 target.

2 rounds from the holster 3 seconds (4 times) 5 yd line
12 shots 25 seconds 7 yd line
12 shots 35 seconds 15 yd line
18 shots 90 seconds 25 yd line

this was fired on Saturday 6/25/16 as the first match in the season for me. I had to do a make up match due to an hand injury last month. I am usually clean out to 15 yard line. 25 yd line is a grizzly bear. I felt like I was moving all over the place and several times when the trigger "broke", I moved and got those damn 8s.

my first gun is my 5" colt 1911 with an action job, Heinie rear sight and Kart barrel fitted by Ray Harms



Ammo was my reloads 200 LWSC with 4.2 grains of N320.

I shot a horrible 491 out of a possible 500 using a B27 target


This was my make up match using the same pistol

494 out of 500


Revolver, is an old PD SW 686 4" which was tuned by Bob Jones (Mississippi) and has a patridge front sight.



Ammo was my reloads. 148 grain HBWC with 2.7 grains of WST

my first stage I shot a horrible 486 out of a 500. I don't have an image of the target.

I hope to improve as the year goes on. I was having trouble getting a clear sight picture. It was very humid and I was dripping sweat and my glasses would not come clean....they would just smear.

in reference to what I have done to improve.....dry fire and focus on front sight and trigger control.

While last year I shot my best ever with around 495 averages with both guns, I want to increase my average and feel I am not improving on that. each range has it own unique challenges (sun in your face and wind conditions) but I feel my eyes and holding steadier with an occasional doink of the trigger is where I would like to see an improvement.

I find a pellet pistol to mess around with in the backyard really helps my handgun shooting. The ranges are short but any practice helps.

My accuracy standard is as long as I'm centered and "in the black" for the most part at 25yds I feel that's pretty good. That's my test for any gun I'm carrying is that I can get most of them in there and I'm good elevation and windage wise. I don't really have anything setup as a target gun per se' so I don't shoot for bullseye accuracy. Most of my guns have Ameriglo or HD sights on them which don't lend themselves to the tightest groups out there. This is one of my EDC pistols a Gen3 G27 and is phenomenally accurate and easy to shoot, off hand too!

Nice shooting and nice gun!

I've found that if my speed performance is going downhill, my 25yd accuracy is suffering. Once I get that back on track, the speed/accuracy just happens. Im going to dry fire all week and I'll get back out this weekend. We'll see if I can't improve my score. Once I get comfortable, I have some HAPs I'm going to load in some new brass to find what I can squeeze outta this thing (and myself).

Edit, to clarify my op: I've shot better with these sights, but when out of practice, I tend to shoot left for some reason. Once I get practice in, the poi drifts back to the center.
