    LMT Piston

I am new to the discussion, but I would like to add that I had a chance to shoot the Sig 556 and the LMT Piston CQB side by side, and it was interesting to see and feel how overbuilt the LMT piston gun is compared to the 551 AR variant. I was thoroughly impressed with the Lewis, and the ease of taking out the piston is fantastic compared to the process of removing the Sig's. The LMT was dead-on iron sights out of the box as well.

From the same person on ar15.com:

I spoke with Gene Swanson @ LMT today. Said they will gladly take it back and check it out, even provided a UPS shipping label. Also said he thinks it's an ammo issue (I tend to agree), mostly with Wolf and other foreign ammunition. He said they test all their products with MilSpec Lake City M193 and M855. I'm going to take it to the range again and try several different brands of ammunition before I send it back. I don't think I'll try Wolf in it again. NetJunkie had problems with several different brands. I had problems with Wolf 62 grn.and South African 55 grn. only.

Marks on my upper show it was fired...but really, problems with all those types and it's an "ammo problem"? I think not. Send me back a rifle that won't shoot Prvi Partisan M855 (like EVERY other gun I've tried) and someone will get a deal on a LMT Piston.

Think i'll just get a 6920 and get a piston kit installed. Sounds like some teething problems that i'd just rather avoid.

Shot my LMT Gas Piston MRP today. Cleaned bore. Light breakfree lube (VERY LIGHT) and used Federal 77 grain Match ammo -- Kicked 10-15% less than my DI LMT MRP fired side by side.

Had to cut day short because my daughter got sick but 250 straight rounds with no failures. Bolt was not holding open on crappy ten rounders bullet buttoned into Cal Compliant lowers. no problem with C-mag 10/30s.

A friend who is a big three gun competitor said I should keep the piston upper and sell my DI CQB MRP upper.

And buy a SECOND LMT piston upper.

Sounds like one bad upper -- I spoke to LMT and they said they they are on top of any owner issues.

Cool. Glad to hear yours is good to go. That gives me hope for mine when it returns. I'm buying a case of Wolf and I plan to beat it like a rented mule.

    This is key:
One of the things about gas pistons I've found is that they actually DON't like wolf ammo because they shells don't have enough power. On my Robinson XCR the gas piston actually has a setting for low powered ammo that the instructions say is for using with "wolf Ammo"

I think LMT, since they are a milspec contractor, probably has this gun set up for full strength ammo. When other people were shooting the 77 grain loads I could see less movement in the gun than with the DI upper.

You could call the guys at LMT and ask if they recommend wolf ammo with their piston. I have seen the great pistons made by ADDAX in Southern California need adjustment set to work with Wolf ammo. Of course, once set for Wolf's low powered ammo, the gun will run on anything.

    LMT Piston

I will say that one thing LMT has shown me over the last year or so is that their customer service is second to none. Unlike a few of the other AR brands I have wrestled with. A buddy had told me how great they were at handling even the small stuff and that all played into my LMT investment decisions. I am sure they will help you get the ammo thing straightened out. Mine (LMT Piston) has been a sledge hammer thus far. Good Luck!

The 1:7 twist of the LMT barrel prefers the heavier (60 grains + ) ammo.

Current issue ammo to services -- are all branches using M855?
