1911 comes back from the project shelf

I hate to admit it, but 15 years ago this Springfield 1911-A1 had its plunger tube pop out and I put it into a .30 cal ammo can and almost forgot about it. (Yeah I have other 1911s)

This past spring I decided to get it back up and running. A new Ed Brown plunger tube was installed and I also decided to fit a new match barrel to it (also Ed Brown) and make some other functional improvements without going hog wild.

An STI hammer and sear was added and I fit an extended thumb safety*, 10-8 NM rear sight, and extended ejector.

All I have left on my list is a nicer aluminum trigger and I intend to make up for lost time with this one.

    * Thumb safety is a King's - out of business for quite a few years.

Now I need to get busy on the pre-war Winchester '94 I've been ignoring.....

Looks good. Forgot it in an ammo can for 15 years? Wow

Almost. I knew it was in there but other projects kept grabbing my time & money.

Trigger, beavertail and beavertail jig are all inbound from Brownells....

Nice job Greg. I bet she is a real shooter for sure. Looking forward to seeing a range report and some group pics.

Looks good. Why not try your hand at checkering the front of the grip?

I've never tried my hand at checkering, I'd have to perfectly nail a bunch of carbon steel bars before I'd ever tackle a pistol frame.

So I've continued to play with the Springfield. The slide recently paid a visit to Novak's and got some sights installed. (Plain black rear w/ white dot front). The STI hammer and sear were moved to another pistol, making room for Nowlin EDM components.

Earlier today I replaced the cast OEM extractor for a forged Ed Brown. The slide stop and firing pin stop were also swapped out with some EGW oversized tool steel parts. The original parts worked fine, but in my experience, are the most likely ones to break - so now they are relegated to backups.

Since my first post last summer I've put about 800 rounds through it (no issues). Looks like I did go hog wild, but I really do love working on 1911s.

Now I intend to shoot this one a lot more and maybe try my hand at Parkerizing in the spring.

    Nice job.
    Parts list looks good.
Bet you notice quite an improvement in "shootability".

You've done a very good job so far. If you do decide to checker the frame yourself, please post photos as you go.

    Nice!

A strip of grit tape on the front strap would do just as well as checkering to improve handling, but that trigger guard is begging to be undercut!
