    Ciener.22 Conversion kit (noob questions)

how exactly does this kit work without messing up your barrel? i mean it seems to me that since the barrel is made for a 5.56 round and is obviously larger than the .22 round like you would lose a lot of accuracy as opposed to a standard .22 barrel, more importantly though wouldnt the .22 round bounce around in the barrel as it was being shot out? also ive heard it fouls up your gun faster,is that true?

You got it right. While not exactly as accurate as a true .22LR barrel, the accuracy is acceptable for under 35 - 40 yds. I got 3 - 4" group offhand at that distance with a 16" Bushmaster 5.56 barrel. For closer, like less than 25 yds., it's very accurate, less than 2". In my opinion, it's not meant to be a long range gun, I use it to practice shooting on the move, multiple targets, etc. and it serves that purpose well, at less than $20 per 500 rounds. At the end of each shooting session, I immediately run a brush through the barrel then shoot a few rounds of .223 ammo through it to clean out any lead deposit.

With a Bushmaster 16" 1/9 barrel, I got groups at 25 yards that ranged from around 1" up to about 3", using iron sights and a myriad of .22 LR ammo. I wouldn't expect much in accuracy past 100 yards though.

ok awesome, well that works. i just want a cheap alternative to the 5.56 (which has doubled in price from the last time i bought 1000 rounds a a couple years ago). im just worried this kit will mess up my barrel somehow

There are minor differences between the .22LR and .223/5.56 barrel inside diameter; about .002". However, from a practical standpoint it makes little to no difference for the intended use. The bullet will not bounce down the barrel as some people profess. The soft lead upsets enough to get sufficient accuracy. Mine group 1.5" - 2" at 50 yds. and in. Therefore, for the intended purpose of inexpensive CQB practice with an AR, it's not really a problem. A dedicated upper is nice for sighting and cleaning purposes, but the slight variation can easily be compensated for by the shooter when using it as a drop-in on the host AR. Reliability is very good with quality .22LR ammo; Mini-Mags work very well. Clean your barrel accordingly and you shouldn't have any issues with build-up.

I have read on another site that either Brownwell or Midway have stopped selling the Ciener kits due to availability being unreliable from Ciener. That same company will now be offering conversion kits from CMMG. I have ordered one the the factory. They will be available for the first time starting this month. They are however, $50-60 higher, but from the all the awful things Ive heard about Ciener, in my opinion it will be worth it

No choice but to wait since everyone seems to be out already.
