In some states, it is, sort of.

Affirmative defense I believe the term is, but somebody can correct me.

In some/lots of states, NFA is technically illegal, HOWEVER if you comply with all federal laws its legal. Your stamp or copy of stamp is your "affirmative defense" that you are complying with the federal law. So in essence, in these states, your stamp is your permission slip and proves you are legal.

*Not a permission slip to shoot at the range. I get the legal ramifications, I'm just talking about RO's and guys at the range getting nosy self righteous fellow shooters.

Twice, by the same RO, at wicens in PA. Good people there, though they are wound Up a bit tight. They were shocked when I pulled a can out, and asked to see the stamp. Happened the second time as well, and my rifle and myself are very recognizable. No big deal, it's their property. My indoor ranges though, couldn't care less and don't ask to see the stamps.

I live within walking distance from Wicens and they do seem like good people but I stopped going there years ago. I understand it's all the developments around that have them worried but I just can't sit at those benches.

A range on private property has the ability to ask as a condition of entry. I've never been asked, but I keep a photocopy rolled up in the stock tube just in case. Someone trying to "keep a copy on file," can go pound sand... I'd be packing up to go to another range at that point.

Never for SBRs or Suppressors but many times when shooting MG. This happens most frequently on private property when surrounding landowners call 911 about "automatic fire". Also had the same thing at private ranges. LEOs rarely know what they are looking at but after checking backstop and paper work they leave with no hassel. Even had a few officers fire a few rounds for giggles. I never shoot NFA without copies of paperwork.

SBRs or silencers have not been issue for me. However, my cousin - a SWAT cop, and I were shooting at a range in Southern California one time and the range officer came over after he heard my cousin shooting his M4 in full-auto. He says, "OK guys. I gotta ask, who was shooting the full-auto?" Note that we had a semi-private bay so the range officers can't see who's doing what in each bay. We told him that it was my cousin (who identified himself as LE at check-in and also stated that he was going to be shooting full-auto). Now I'm not sure what they would've done otherwise. Perhaps, they have range policies and they're just trying to cover their asses. Who knows.

A couple guys brought mgs to my friends property once and neighbors called after we fed the m60.
Cops showed up, glanced at papers and shot the bull for a few minutes.

Forgot about that till I read your post.
