I have 2 Baofengs, UV 82 and UV 86HP. I plan to liste more than talk; maybe add a mobile down the road. The hobby is way more expensive than than my rate of currency flow

This thread inspired me to do some comms preparation.

I purchased two UV-82HP's and paid the $65 to uncle sugar to be a legal user of GMRS. With my background I could probably pass the HR test fairly easily, I just don't have the time for it right now. Perhaps at some point in the future.

It may have been mentioned already, but probably is worth repeating. I found the CHIRPW software extremely handy for programming my radio's. It let's you define you software setting on your radios' along with all of the frequencies you want assigned to different channels and copy them from one radio to another as well as backing up your radio configurations.

Chirp makes it nice and easy.

If you're running the factory antenna, take a peek at some of the Nagoya offerings.

I'm running the 771, and a buddy is running the 701.

Both are light years ahead of the factory antenna. The 771 is somewhat obnoxious on a handheld. While the performance is there, it's better suited as a "back of plate carrier" antenna, rather than a general purpose one.

Roger that. The stock rubber duck pretty much sucks. You'll be happy with those Nagoyas.

    Here's another cheap project:

So the testing itself took me 6 minutes and I scored 100 I never scored a 100 on any practice test so what a relief! I should have my call sign this Wednesday. I think I'll start on the General while I have momentum...
