You can dick around all you want with buffer and spring combos, but you will always be able to run heavier buffers using the rifle length spring. This is the easiest way to show the tangible increase in operational envelope.

To the other poster, increased spring rate will have nearly 0 change on rearward velocity as the energy is simply too much too fast. Spring rate will increase forward velocity which does aid in feeding from the magazine. Heavy buffers will reduce velocity both directions, but the increased mass also can increase feeding reliability the same way a stronger spring will, if you are well within your rifles operational envelope..

To everyone asking to be "sold" on the A5, you need to read ALL the threads in search and ALL the pages. It's all here on this site.

Besides the action spring, the patented a5 buffer also uses a small bias spring inside the buffer itself. This resets the weights to the front face of the buffer after every cycle so the weight being presented to the carrier is always the same shot to shot. Now you have the "dead blow" hammer affect and no loose weights positioned randomly inside of the buffer.

I can't say how many times this information has been posted, hopefully this thread will help.

It's not for everyone. The benefits are there and have been explained numerous times in various threads.

    readyfireaim,

Not having had the Magpul version long, I can't say much. That said a tube is a tube so to speak. They are all made solid from my experience. It really depends on what flavor you want.

IIRC The A5 was developed to provide a reliable collapsible stock for M16A4 rifles so that length could be adjusted for folks wearing body armor NOT to provide more stock positions for carbines. Then the carbine world got hold of them and the race was on, I think it is a good system but life was sure simpler when you had one spring/buffer for rifles and one spring/buffer for carbines.

Last year when I started spec'ing out a build in which I was using a new 18" LaRue Stealth mid-length barrel I had won, I KNEW that I wanted the A5 buffer system. I had been intrigued with it for many years, but had never had a build in which I was set on using it. I did my research for quite a while to make sure that it is what everyone was saying it was. I bought the BCM version and coupled it with a LANTAC E-BCG. I will say this, I am well pleased with the A5 buffer system. I does exactly what I was looking for it to do.

The recoil on this rifle is virtually non-existent. Cycling is extremely smooth and consistent. I could not ask for it to run any smoother or better. I have since recommended the A5 system to several people of whom could benefit from it.

I see little reason for using anything else besides this buffer system imo.

Maybe on game guns with special sized gas port, light ass bcg, and buffers, etc...

Is the BCM tube cut differently just to save weight?

Righter, read my comments on the first page. In depth explanation.

the spring is strongest when compressed. this is not the position of the spring during the delay in extraction.
