Experts find potential cause of Crohn's

My fiance who has Crohn's just saw this. It's interesting as she's been talking to groups of people online and certain probiotics were said to help. She's been taking them and it's really helped out. The study is potential good news for those who have it.

In short, they studied various people in a way to reduce influence of genetics on testing and found a correlation of 2 bacteria and 1 fungus, and Crohn's disease.

I'd think this best in the health section of the forums. The title is overly optimistic and cause and effect far from established. Having said that, the research now really focusing on the human biome and it's impact, which is far ranging and extensive, is yielding interesting and promising findings to treatment.

Like journalists who get assigned gun articles, I am not certain this information is correct.
I don't know of any Crohn's treated by surgery. I could be wrong.

    Surgery is common:

"About 23 to 45 percent of people with ulcerative colitis and up to 75 percent of people with Crohn’s disease will eventually require surgery. Some people with these conditions have the option to choose surgery, while for others, surgery is an absolute necessity due to complications of their disease."

Yup. The wife has been suffering with severe UC for almost 6 years now. She's one more failed drug away from surgery.

You might want to take a look at the LEF protocols which discusses both traditional and non approaches to this affliction:

Appreciate the link Will. Just glancing thru, she's already incorporated a lot of that into her daily routine, with little to no impact. Now she's four months into Remicade infusions, and the docs are concerned she's built up antibodies to it.

Surgery is a very common form of treatment for Crohn's. I just had surgery for Crohn's back in July to remove nearly 60 total centimeters of my terminal ileum, cecum, and appendix. It was the best medical decision I've ever made. I had a pretty severe stricture (narrowed area) in my terminal ileum that created partial food blockages. You want to talk about pain? That was miserable. I've always been told that 75% of people with Crohn's will require surgery, and 50% of those will require additional surgeries.

I had not heard about this development yet, but I know a lot of people had been putting their hopes in the MAP vaccine. I'm currently being treated with Humira and Imuran to hopefully keep the disease from flaring up again. These meds can have some serious side effects. It would be a joy if a simple probiotic worked. Unfortunately, us Crohnies respond to many different meds in many different ways. What works for some doesn't work for others, and what may work for someone for a year or so, may work for others for decades. There are also a lot of varying severity levels. I don't have a very severe case, but it went untreated for a long time. It'd be a miracle if they found something that worked for everyone.

Aggie, is she taking any other meds with the Remicade? Immuno-modulators such as Imuran and 6-mp are used pretty regularly to prevent or delay the creation of antibodies. It also seems to increase the effectiveness of the biologics (Humira, Remicade, Cemzia, etc.) If the Remicade has indeed failed, I'd suggest looking into Humira. It's a self injection I give every other week, so I don't have to go have an infusion that lasts for several hours. It's also supposed to have a lesser chance of antibody build up.
