    Pistol Cleaning Regimen

I don't want to start a thread about which cleaning supplies are the best etc. I just want to know how detailed you get when cleaning your pistols. Specifically ones you stake your life on. People out there have different methods and ideas about how to do it but if it works, it works. I saw this video a while back and I'd like to make it as simple as he does but I'd probably need to break it down and clean it every ~1,000 rounds for a detail clean just for peace of mind. How detailed do you get and what is your personal regimen to keep your pistols up and running properly?

Cleaning is one of those things everyone has an opinion on and method of doing they think is right. As long as it works for you, you do what you think is best.

I clean (just clean, not detail strip and clean) every 500-1000 rounds on pistols depending how much they're being used. The exception to that is my carry pistols which get cleaned after every range session. But I don't go overboard with cleaning either...snake the barrel, clean the breech face, Q-tip the carbon out, inspect the gun, lube and rock on.

I only detail strip if I need to get into the slide or frame (extractor or spring replacement on a Glock for example) or it gets exposed to something nasty (dropped a G19 into a salt water marsh a couple of years ago).

    Yeah, well...

I clean mine every 2 minutes...

In all seriousness, I clean most of my firearms after each range trip, but I tend to avoid brushes on the bores unless it seems needed, usually just use solvent and a patch.

I rarely detail strip frames, but more often will remove strikers and clean out those channels and such.

Overall, I -try- and if it takes me a day or two to clean some of my "non-essential" arms, I don't bat an eyelash.

I also don't own any firearms with a "raw" bore where I risk rusting/pitting due to the raw metals or use any corrosive ammo.

I'll usually run a bore snake through the barrel and take a brush/q-tip to the rest about once a week depending on rounds fired. I don't even necessarily clean my carry pistol after every range trip if it was a low round count.

A serious cleaning every few months. Mostly, I clean it as needed.

    Apply lube as required.

As for taking the slide off for Q-tip cleaning, every 1-2k rounds.

    Detail cleaning... pretty much never.

My cleaning regimen is motivated more by my desire to inspect parts than it is to assuage some OCD urge to have my guns white-glove clean. Field strip, inspect and clean roughly every 1000 rounds or sooner if the gun is acting weird. Detail strip happens far less frequently.....every 3-5K rounds probably.

I clean after every range session or day spent hunting. Even if I don't fire my gun during a day in the field, I still run a boresnake through it, wipe off the dirt and apply a light coat of oil.

It's just habit from my Army days.

I detail clean whenever I decide to watch tv and feel like cleaning guns for fun.
