Barrel Profile For Defense and Combat

Are any of the newer lighter barrel profiles suitable for defense or combat use? I figure there is no probably free lunch here and an M4 or medium profile is likely the lightest that's suitable, but with the breadth and depth of knowledge here I figured I'd go ahead and ask. Thanks in advance for your input.

The original lightweight barrel did fine in Vietnam. That's full auto, 20 round mags.

No reason why a lightweight barrel would be inadequate for defensive use.

A lightweight barrel might be a better choice for defensive uses. Easier to sweep, transition between targets and plenty accurate at defensive distances to get the job done.

Just pick the profile you need for the mission. You'll want a heavier barrel for an accurate long range (offensive) gun, but a light barrel can work for most defensive roles.

I did the "jack of all trades, master of none" approach, and went with a with a medium weight fluted barrel for my recce, and a medium profile for the SBR as well. The fluting save weight on the longer barrel, and it still cools better, and handles the harmonic vibrations better than a pencil barrel, but isn't as heavy as a truck axle. My 16" recce is lighter than my SBR...

Of course, there's a difference between "defense" and "combat".

For "defense" I think of just the needed rounds to end the once in a lifetime threat. Anything will do providing you can hit the target.

For "combat" I think of possible long, drawn out, or repeated firefights, where you are going through mag after mag, against multiple threats, on a daily basis. I would want the heavier barrel for serious "combat".

That's the objective as well as lighter and easier to lug around - I just want to make sure it can still stand up to SHTF fire rates. I'm not worried about losing a little accuracy at CQB or medium ranges. I've been thinking about a Hanson or GUNNER profile, but it seems to good to be true.

That recce barrel sounds interesting, too. Learning some things today, and that's always a good day.

^^This^^ I am not against accurate rifles I just wouldn't go out of my way to build one for home defence/SHTF use. POI shift and MOA accuracy mean nothing in your bedroom or backyard. Combat... If it's you against the world what you are shooting isn't going to matter much either. I would still choose lightweight over accuracy.

If you need to worry about shooting so much in SHTF what your barrel profile is a factor, you are in serious doo-doo.

I'd go lightweight, the BCM ELW barrels are real sweet, and i haven't really noticed groups ever opening up compared to my G'ovt profiles

Nobody wants it, the odds are fortunately low, but if it happens it's best to be prepared. I have accurate AR's already, but they aren't my choice for punching holes in paper. Serious doo-doo is what I'm asking about.

Those look like winners and the prices aren't bad through BCM, either.

Colt 6720 has a very nice lightweight profile too, but I don't what you define as "combat" and if a barrel like that would be too light.
