There are "early" 603's (XM16E1) and "late" 603's (M16A1) with the primary differences being 3-prong ---> birdcage, flat plate ---> trap door, un-fenced ---> fenced.
I could see a slab side finding a birdcage, but did fenced lower guns ever come with 3-prong hiders?
Who is our Colt expert? Is Bartocci on here?
Sample of 1....I'm no expert but as a Marine grunt during the mid thru the late 70's I was issued M16 A1's that had both 3-prong and bird cage hiders. All the rifles I saw had fenced lowers. None of the uppers I saw had brass deflectors. I never saw a slab side rifle. A lot of guys I knew (me too) preferred the 3-prong because it was a great tool for twisting and breaking the wire that held cases of C-rats together. As long as the company armorer wasn't looking!
