That's basically what I was saying... but then as shown in post #30, fenced lower guns with 3-prong hiders were issued.

Probably it's a possible config, just very low percentage.

My rifle is an XM16E1/ "Early-603" type:

I personally saw a Colt XM16E1 lower with an A1 upper (birdcage FH, teardrop FA, CL barrel and bore) while stationed in Panama 30 years ago. No doubt an arsenal refinished gun at some point.

XM16E1 uppers look just like the M16A1 uppers. Both have forward assist. XM16E1 upper receivers were lacking the typical forge codes on the carrying handle. They had proof marks near the port door opening. In Dec. 1971, they started using barrels with chrome line bores and chambers. The first were marked C MP B. The later, which came in 1974, were marked C MP CHROME BORE. Some XM16E1, like some M16A1s, were arsenal refinished after the war. Many barrels were replaced. I have a clone with a M16 upper that I bought several years ago that had been arsenal refinished. It has an XM16E1 upper receiver and a SAK replacement barrel. It also has a darker finish. I had built this as an A1 clone since the upper assembly was advertised as a M16A1. I discovered a few years later that it was an XM16E1 upper receiver.

Note: This is an older pic of this rifle. The safety selector has since been changed out to an original M16 selector (modified).

Renegade04, your collection is pretty similar to Chris Bartocci's shown in the video I linked to... Very nice.

The 3-prong FH was used on Model 602s, early XM16E1s, Model 604s, and was known to have been used on some early M16A1s, but not a great deal of them. Most M16A1s were produced with the birdcage FH as was some late XM16E1s. For a short while, Colt was using whatever was available to fill orders. If Colt is having U.S. Ordnance produce the rifle in that configuration, it is not a true M16A1. It is more like a hybrid as it is a combination of the XM16E1 and M16A1. As for lower receivers, the XM16E1 used a partial-fence lower as did the early Model 604s. Late 604s and the M16A1s had full-fence lowers. Personally, I will stick to my clone builds. They are more correct than this new Colt rifle.
This is a great post. I've no interest in paying Colt 2 grand for something they threw together. If we're going to call it a "clone" it needs to be correct (given the obvious limitations of lower receivers and FCG parts). Much more satisfaction in finding and using original parts or proper reproductions.

No doubt the fan boys will trip over themselves for it however and Colt will make a quick buck for a halfway done job.

Colt is relying on their rollmark to sell these for that price. People have to remember that Colt is not producing these. They are supplying some of the parts, but U.S. Ordnance in Reno,Nevada is manufacturing these under license by Colt and they are being distributed by Colt.

I have an A1 clone to remember my 4 years as an Army grunt in the 80's. Being a lefty I did put a C-7 upper on it (A1 carry handle with brass deflector). The bolt I had hard chromed, but not the carrier. I also built it on a 20" A1 profile, chrome lined, 1:7 twist barrel from McKay Enterprises. They were supposedly IDF contract overruns made by Colt ("C" mark on the barrel). So not a true A1 replica I know, but it has "The Feel" and can shoot the newer heavier bullets!

Personally, I am glad that the UAW isn't building this gun (as it would have ding marks all over it). The gun collecting consumer (which is who will buy this) we will also appreciate it.

I will be buying one for sure. Ready to get my name on the list, whenever pre-orders are possible.

Grant, are these marked M16A1 or XM16E1 like the one at the NRA show?
