I used to think those thoughts, then I got my own C96. Then I saw how many people bought red 9 grips and did magic conversions..... and I lost faith in the world.

Not saying that is what happened with TriggerFish at all, I'm not even sure if that is his or if its borrowed, but regardless of caliber or ownership, its a great pic of a stunning pistol.

Stick is correct about a lot of Red 9s that show up at gun shows and on the internet, both for sale or in photos.
I have had a long ‘love affair’ with the C96 in all its forms. My first purchase was a $5 solid aluminum Broomhandle. I found it in an ad in the back of a comic book long before I could own a real handgun. It was: ‘the same size and weight as the real gun!’
Many years later I bought a REAL C96 in 7.63x25 (.30 Mauser) at an Oregon gun show. Eventually 3 more were added including this Bolo Red 9:

This is a totally mismatched #s, refinished, re-bored to 9mm, with after market Red 9 grip panels… BUT I paid $300 for it OTD and it is a fun shooter!
My worst C96 Red 9 fiasco was the one I didn’t buy. A fellow MT varmint hunter, WA Arms Collectors director, had the golden unicorn of Red 9 Brooms: all original finish, all matching #s, spectacular condition, AND a numbers matching wood holster/stock! It had belonged to his late father and over the years I asked to buy it about every other month. Years went by, I finally quit asking. Then out of the blue he called me to see if I was still interested. We had just moved to AZ and I didn’t have $2500 to spend on another Broom. Still bummed 16 years later.
Now the C96 'Red 9' in the photo I posted in my post #206 was bought from a WW1 & WW2 arms collector I’ve known for 45 years at a GREAT price. It is an old refinish and has replacement grips from Germany. It has all matching #s and is certified as one of the 1916 Prussian Contract Red 9 guns.

I just wish I could have found one like Stick’s with MY name on the barrel! ☺
