The chosen action spring can make a pretty big difference. There's many events during the action cycle, some action springs help reliability, others not so much. Others may make the platform "feel" better to the user for some uses. The two circumstances do not necessarily align though. I would tend towards a system that maintains reliability without too many negatives for the user over a system that is very user friendly in use that sacrifices reliability and/or durability. With our current platform, It is all too easy to fall into either category without knowing where they actually are.

Before the A5 system, I ran a H2 with blue Springco. Never any issues. I even tested a standard H3 with blue Springco (had lock back issues with lighter loads but 5.56 ran really well).

I'll also add to my above post that spring rate is another interesting aside to buffer weight. Not all spring brands perform/behave exactly the same. While the 4 brands I tried all worked well, the seemingly weaker Vltor and JP had less perceived "red dot bounce" than the fresh BCM and Brownells. The Vltor spring is about 500-rounds-new but seems a tad softer, and the JP has a few thousand cycles on it (and measures shorter than all of them) yet they both performed perfectly. The Brownells Chrome Silicon spring seemed the snappiest which is great for stripping rounds but I noticed more forward dive of the muzzle. It's all subjective and relatively small differences, but noticeable nonetheless. Hope this helped someone. I was initially interested in getting a Springco Green, but not so sure now.
Mine was ejecting at 1:30 and the cases were being dented at the bottle neck taper and several were so bad, I didn't want to keep them for reloading. I've noticed the same thing you mentioned with the latest Vltor springs. They just seem softer than they used to be. I like the Springco Green and run it in most of my A5 systems. (I still have a couple of the old ones that will eventually be upgraded.)

Did quite a bit more testing over the weekend and the A5 system is just wonderful. The action is getting pretty gritty from shooting and the A5-H3 buffer still works fine. I shot 300 rounds of XM855 and then did some more limp-wristed single shots with the Wolf ammo.

I'll keep putting this carbine through the paces, but I don't think I'll have any issues for a really long time.

With 5.56, I had the same dent on the case mouths of my ejected brass. I am happy to report that I also don't see this anymore.

    Data Point

BCM 16" ELW BFH KMR-A upper with a SF 3-P FH muzzle device.

Lower was previously equipped with a carbine tube/spring and H buffer, which ran with no issues.

My go-to load is the .223 Gold Dot 75, which has run 100% in this rifle and has proven to be consistently precise (5-shot groups typically hovering just over 1 MOA at 100 yards). I shoot mostly XM193 when dinking around at the range, which also ran 100%.

A few weeks ago I installed the BCM A5 kit (using the A5H0 buffer that came with it) and the rifle remains as boringly reliable as ever, though it seems to be smoother. Ejection is around 2 o'clock with about 4 - 5 feet of throw, and very consistent regardless of load. Ejection seemed a touch stronger with the carbine buffer set up but was not quite as consistent in terms of where the casings landed - I guess that tells the story right there.

Count me as pleased with the purchase.

You going to try the A5H2 buffer?

I wouldnt use an A5H0 buffer on anything other than a 14.5" middy but it just goes to show you how forgiving the A5 buffer system is.

I neglected to mention that my upper is a mid length. I had no issues with the H buffer in the carbine set up either, but a heavier buffer is worth a try.

My new project is being built around a Noveske 13.7 middy. Thinking about running this with the A5H0 and the standard A5 action spring, but will try it with a A5H2 + Sprinco Green I'm currently running in my 11.5. Hoping to get some insight from anyone currently running a 13.7" middy with an A5.
