Noveske will do custom orders, but you have to order more than one. Like 10 minimum I think? No point in doing an SS barrel unless you're going to run a lot of match ammo.

BCM vs. Sionics...both are chrome lined non gov't profiles, but I would take the Sionics since the gas port is smaller and you can get an MLOK CMR vs the BCM KMR.

If I started another 11.5" project, this is what I would use and order it with a URX 4 from the get go and be done.

My other 11.5" projects have consisted of DD or Noveske 11.5" with factory pinned gas blocks or Colt 11.5" barrels with shaved FSB. None of these projects I have been completely satisfied with.

    1. The DD barrel is overgassed
    2. The Noveske barrel is a heavy socom type contour but otherwise ok
    3. The Colt with shaved FSB will not fit under most slim rails.

I had to use a 10" KMR which I am not happy with. I would rather have a Noveske NSR, but they don't make it in 10" length to cover a 11.5" barrel.

The KAC 11.5" upper has everything ready to go. URX 4 with 7 sides in 10" length rail and no gunsmithing required.

I spent way too much time thinking about 10 vs 11 vs 12 inch barrels for my first sbr. Then a sharp member pointed out that with good ammo it won't matter , and with bad ammo it won't matter.

Grabbed a chf 11.5 bcm when they had the free bcg sale. It's been great.

Then I did a spare no expense sbr and used a chf barrel from Rainier, since only they would tell me the gas port size, 068/069, and had it chopped down to the mk1 rail making it 10.8, no port enlargement necessary.

If the sionics barrel was available then I would have strongly considered it

If you want to go ahead and send along your credit card number and the corresponding CSC, I'll place an order with KAC presently.

After reading every post of the 13 page Sionics 11.5" RGP thread, I am beginning to see what you mean. That, and the 11.5" Faxon Midlength + SLR thread have very compelling solutions to the same problem. My main--and only--concern with the Sionics option is that I worry about cycling cheap target ammo without a suppressor. As much as I would love to say that it will be 75%+ suppressor, that is putting the can before the horse, as it were. This will be a project that comes together in waves, and starts with a rifle that can shoot now(ish), not in $4000's time.

I am really kicking myself for not breaking off a piece for that Sionics blem lower sale that just ran over Christmas. Would have been the perfect platform to start on when registered as a pistol and SBR'ed at a later date...

Mine cycled everything fine, to include pmc bronze. Although it would not lock back on the bronze. Locked back on everything else though.

If I get some simple malfunctions out of training ammo, that is just... more training. Also, failing to achieve bolt hold open on the last round of cheap training ammo isn't a deal breaker. I assume that with full pressure 5.56x45mm loads, there are none such issues? That would be what the other thread indicates, at least.

Wes tested it with a variety loads (as was mentioned elsewhere). With that said, we do not guarantee it will run 100% unsuppressed, but it wasn't the intention. We did these initially for an agency that wanted to reduce the gas and run their suppressors all the time.

I didn't blindly come to that conclusion. You can do the math, I already did. You can put together a mutt gun and it costs as much or more (when you factor in the tools to assemble it) and at best you have something that costs nearly as much, as much, or more than a KAC upper but without the advantages of the E3 system and high resale value.

I wasted a lot of money on mutt guns and even some nice guns (like BCM) before I realized it's actually cheaper and substantially easier to just bite off a piece of the KAC pie.

If you're obsessive over little shit that doesn't matter, like the difference between an SSA trigger and a KAC 2 stage, or the difference between the way an LMT SOPMOD feels and a Magpul ACS, then it makes no sense to buy the KAC.

I don't care about frivolous shit, so I took my hard earned Kopeks and bought a KAC and threw a T2 and X300 U on it. It does what a rifle should do and does it exceptionally well.

Too many people worry about frivolous shit when they should just be shooting. It's a rifle, not a damn anniversary present for you're wife.

FWIW, I just finished my third, and probably last, AR-15. It has an 11.5" Centurion Arms barrel, Vltor MUR upper receiver, 10.75" Hodge Wedge Lock handguard, V Seven Extreme Environment gas tube, and SLR GB7 Micro Pin gas block.

I was able to get it to consistently lock back on empty unsuppressed shooting PMC Bronze .223 while using a BRT CustomTune Gas Port Insert size 0.063", while using it with an LMT full auto e-BCG, Vltor A5H2, and Sprinco Green spring (cryo treated). Gas blowback with a Surefire SOCOM556-RC was not particularly noticeable when used in conjunction with an AXTS Freedom Bone, shooting Winchester Western W3131 5.56 NATO.

I would have liked to use an adjustable gas block, but none of my preferred choices would fit the Wedge Lock (MicroMOA or SLR), so I went with the gas port insert instead. Time will tell how it does.
