i just had this talk with a co worker/buddy of mine. Pointed him towards the Aimpoint Pro with a VTAC or VCAS sling and a good light setup on the recommended Colt Combat Unit Carbine. Told him to take the rest of the money and buy mags and ammo for a training class. He listened, and he is happy with it.

The Colt CCU looks nice. $1500 puts you in range of Daniel Defense and plenty of other options though.
