I like the bore snake for field cleaning. It doesn't replace a good rod and guide setup but I always run the snake when I'm done shooting if possible.
I'm going to have to give the weed whacker deal a try. That's a good cheap tip.

+1. Used to use the coated Dewey rods. Now I used all Otis, all the time, for all my stuff. With the right combo of Otis and solvents in fact, I don't even have to use brass brushes much anymore.

    +1 Boresnake.

I've got Dewey rods, too, but I use them just to swab with solvent before I pull the boresnake through.

If you're going to use a rod, then get a good nylon-coated one. Keeping a steel rod for emergencies is a good idea. Using a steel rod regularly is a bad idea...

For cleaning chambers, I've got non-rotating but flexible handle/rod into which I can screw a chamber brush. It works easily and allows me to really scrub the chamber (even those that I can't get at straight, like my M1 Carbine and M1A).

    YMMV,

    Ben
