So, what did people ever do with the eyelet on the early pistol grips?
Anybody have pics of lanyards or slings attached there?
Anyone? Bueller?

Yes, I am sorry, I did mean the early M16A1/XM177 type.

I thought it was an odd question, but hey I didn't realize these grips ever had holes!
More google:
There are two distinct mil-spec pistol grips used on AR-15 & M16 series rifles; the first one, used with the original AR-15 and all variants through the M16A1, is relatively smooth and has light checkering on the sides as well as a hole in the bottom-front of the grip that acts as a sling swivel mounting point (though was rarely if ever used in this fashion).
The second grip, introduced with the M16A2 and standard issue on all subsequent Colt rifles, adds a finger step between the middle and ring fingers, filled in the useless sling swivel hole at the bottom-front of the grip, has heavier checkering on the sides, and has ridging on the back for a better grip.
The key words in that are "rarely if ever used" as a sling attachment. I wonder if anybody ever used it that way?

Armalite was recently selling a grip with a sling wire installed through that eyelet. You could buy the grip with or without it. Obviously it was intended to be used with a sling. I've never seen that eyelet used at all.

Now you have:

I did not read this anywhere however am taking a guess, the early models I believe used a fiberglass stock that possibly could not accept the sling point. So a sling point was put on the grip instead. Note the AR180 also uses a grip sling point, although this seems designed as work around to the folding stock.

Makes sense to me.
