    Machetes

Who makes the best machete? I am looking for a top quality machete but am not that familiar with different companies that make them. I have been looking at a Cold Steel machete or Ontario Knife Work machete.

    Lightbulb Livesay Knives

Between those two I would go with an Ontario at that price point.

Check out Newt Livesay custom knives, his Recon Combat Machete, R.C.M. for $150. It is 12" x 1/4" high carbon tool steel.

Hard to beat for serious hard use.

What do you want to do with it?

Martindale is probably the best known *quality* machete maker, they have numerous designs and are often copied (Condor).

If you want just a brush hook, Gerber makes a great one... but if you are looking for a good, multipurpose "bush knife" -- then the Ontario, Cold Steel or any of those are a fine choice.

What is the intended use? For woods or trail work get one with a "D" type handle guard. I spent a few years on wildfire and trail crews as a kid and saw three guys slice their fingers to the bone when their hands slipped and ran down the blade. They were banned the last few years for safety reasons and replaced with Swede axes.

If for use as a weapon, I have no expertise regarding machetes but I did see the trailer for the movie.

I want the machete to keep a good sharp edge and be durable. I will primarily use it for Marijuana Eradication. But I will also use it to clear other brush and small saplings to get to the areas during my hike, thats why I want a good quality machete that will last and keep a sharp edge. I want one in the 18" range.

Honestly, for the money, the Cold Steel ones (typically less than $20) are pretty good as a pure tool machete. You can get two for the price of one of the "nicer" ones.

    Check out the Latin models.

I use a machete EVERY DAY at work, and I highly recommend these:

    Gerber Brush Thinner Machete.

The hooked blade works like a charm, and it holds an edge like nobody's business.

I've used Ontario Machetes in the past, but I'd rate them second place in comparison to the Bush Hook.

It combines the nimble, small-profile of a machete with all the benefits of a Bush Axe.

There it is... for what you are doing, that is a great tool: light, easy to swing, very good blade and a design that really works.

    K.L.'s singing my song.

The Gerber is nimble like Santa's elves on the 23rd, but still manages to cut like a lightsaber.

It seems to take, and hold, an edge better than any bush knife I've ever owned.
