Tell them the engraving was for insurance and estate planning. Plus who in the world would ever think a revolver was being used to SBR. Although, I actually did see one this weekend on one of the old cowboy shows.

Will you be traveling in a time machine? Sounds like you are headed back to the Salem witch hunts.

If you are really concerned about going to a communist state, you better read their laws and be sure they don't have some 'gotcha' laws because I don't think they are overly concerned with Federal law.

Yes, though its one I like. If theres no problem with having it there if I leave the stock behind, Id like to have it with me. Oddly, I seem to shoot more when back in that civilized country than in the west. I guess its more of a social thing there. Some of the most fun Ive had at shoots was a 5 plate shoot I did with a single action revolver. I wasn't in any danger of winning, but I definitely wasnt at the back of the pack.

Edit: No Salem witch hunt, though it seems that way from some comments about the state online. They have some tight laws, I just want to be sure I'm good to go if I SBR it and want to travel with it.

I don't know if you know this or not but the State transport form for an SBR can be up to a year. So you could do that and the worse thing that could happen is... 'well I have my approval letter, but I forgot the stock anyway, so it's just a revolver.'

Without the stock it's not and SBR so the form really doesn't apply. The other state would basically have to have a law that says you can't bring any part of a registered weapon in. which would be a bit bizarre but I could imagine NY, CA and the like doing that. Just in case they need to nail someone by some means.

It's hard to say this without sounding like a condescending douche, but if you don't know the law, you probably shouldn't offer opinions about it on gun forums (this is directed at most (not all) of the posts in this thread). NFA rules are very nuanced, complicated and often contradictory. It's hard for people to learn when bad or speculative info is posted. It takes a long time to get your head wrapped around it and have decent chance of not breaking a rule.

All NFA weapons except machine guns are NFA by configuration... Machine guns are always machine guns, SBRs are only SBRs if it meets the definition of an SBR at that moment (Same with SBSs, AOWs, DDs, etc). In this case, if you have an SBR'd pistol, and leave the stock at home, it's a title I pistol, and you can cross state lines without kissing any federal asses.

Look at chapter 2 of the NFA handbook. It tells you exactly what does and doesn't make an SBR. https://www.atf.gov/firearms/docs/at...ter-2/download

    Section 2.5, specifically:

Section 2.5 Removal of firearms from the scope of the NFA by modification/elimination of components.

Firearms, except machineguns and silencers, that are subject to the NFA fall within the various definitions due to specific features. If the particular feature that causes a firearm to be regulated by the NFA is eliminated or modified, the resulting weapon is no longer an NFA weapon.

Keep in mind that there are mistakes in the NFA handbook, as well as contradictory rulings by the ATF. You have to read a lot, learn what the most reliable sources are, and double check almost everything you hear... because a lot of people who don't know the rules don't let that stop them from posting.
