According to Retroblackrifle.com, the furniture on the 601 was painted green. It's possible that different lots of paint resulted in slightly different shades, but what I'm seeing on their website looks very similar to what's on Brownell's website.

Link to Retroblackrifle.com's entry on the Colt 601.

I believe I read somewhere that the green-painted furniture on the 601 was later repainted black - except when it was outright replaced with newer production black furniture.

Interesting, FJ. That would explain some of the "inconsistensies" in color vs a green plastic.

    On some thumbdrive I had/have a museum pic of a "green" M16.

If you wanted to go that far just find some of the drabbest olive and go to town. But I figure if yer gonna paint a gun might as well camo it.

Still, this should be a retro gun offered by Brownell's:

I reckon if a UFO crashed somewhere USAF dudes would roll up toting those and them ginned up Navy M60s

MrG&G also touches on the original furniture being brown bakelite which was then painted green in his review of the Brownell's 601 homage:

(That's right. I'm calling it an homage. Because it isn't a clone. And like modern watches that are homages - which is where I'm borrowing the term from - to classics from decades gone by, these are not only different in details, they're also made from more modern and better materials.)

I actually like "homage" as it gives class to the heritage of the rifles. I am more interested in the CAR-15 but would put some Krylon on the USAF one were I into that particular model.

Like primer, brown, then green for that dingy drab look

got my Brownells M16A1 clone. It is more black then dark gray. The chrome lined bore is hard to see but it is there. It’s not done like a normal GI chromelined chamber. You have to see it to understand. Other then that, it is awesome. It is very well done. Nice furniture. I actually love it. Would buy it again.

Yep. Maybe they weren't all the same shade. The photos on Retroblackrifle seem to show a darker olive green paint, with Brownell's being a lighter shade. I guess the only way to know for sure is seeing both in person.

I hope A2 retro uppers become a thing. I resorted to a DPMS upper for mine, since no one else makes a new one as far as I can see, and the windage knob is nearly all the way left.

I sent it back, got a new one, and was pretty much identical, maybe 3 clicks more to the center.

    Thanks for sharing!

I agree with the homage term. Problem is maybe 5% of the US population knows what that word means.

Or maybe a LRRP team in ERDL snaking about in the boonies with CAR-15s. While The Doors plays.

And for the AR-10s a buncha Latino guys in WWII camo on a boat heading to the coast as Walk Dont Run by the Ventures plays.

They couldnt print enough money nor make enough guns if they did that.
