He is a hardcore left winger, but surprisingly negative on the draft dodgers. He mentioned that Ken Burns' documentary got him all riled up again about the guys who ran and let someone else go to die.

Last month had a 49 yoa Gulf War War I vet die from complications from 1991. Still bothering me about how unfair that is.
Completely off topic now, but my old man was on a tin can during Nam. Has a few pretty awesome stories, up to an including one about running into a tanker, which I probably should bring up in another thread, being "over there" during Tet, as well as being over there when the USS Pueblo was taken. Have an uncle who was a Marine as well, best story, and one of the very few I have ever heard him tell was about being ordered to occupy a hill and arriving to find the army had been air lifted onto it while they had to march. When they sat down to eat C rations the army had hot chow flown in via helo, the marine's proceeded to then take the Army's hot chow. I'm sure some jarheads on here appreciate that.

That is enough thread drift from me for the night.

Old Navy VV here. Was at Danang for 68 TET. I was with VAP61 recon. I was on a carrier doing SEATO exercises with multiple countries on the way to Bangkok doing zigzag at night and the destroyer U.S.S.Evans zigged at the wrong time and the Australian carrier Melbourne cut it in half. We picked up the remaining survivors at daylight. I was also going to the Forrestal and a friend asked me to trade so he could get his reenlistment bonus tax free. He was trapped below decks where the water was coming in from water being used to fight the fires. 130 men were killed. I would like to have one like I carried back then.

Music is/was pretty important. You may not be able to carry a radio with you but you can carry a song anywhere.

If you had the "ideal" Vietnam War class, on the last day you should play We Gotta Get Outta This Place by the Animals.
The hot thing period correct for music would be reel to reel you would record your albums on, that and Nikon cameras were big PX sellers.

The XM16E1, M16A1, and XM177E2 would have the small rectangular pad like this.

The selectors appear wrong too. At least from what I can see of the photos.

Seems odd Brownell's would miss these details.

What about the Troy XM177E2 and GAU5? Do these have a more correct dust cover?

You have to understand that these rifles are for those who have an affinity or passion for the classic M16 and carbine. They are not to be compared to any newer ARs in the same price range. It is an apples VS oranges comparison. For me, as a retro builder and collector, I can appreciate what Brownells has done for the retro AR community and those looking to get into a classic M16 clone.

All you need to add a lower receiver and build the lower assembly.

Here is a great option for a complete A4 type rifle.

From guys that I know that have bought the furniture kits, the handguards have been met with praise. They are constructed very well.

Were the original Air Force M16s really that shade of green? I can't find any photos with anything but black, and black was all I saw when I was in years back.

IIRC this picture taken in 1962 with Maria Fletcher is of the green AR-15. But it is in black and white. Notice the waffle mag and the lighter shade on the furniture

    M16 wasnt a military designation until 1964.
By then "The Man" started screwing with them.

ETA Bear in mind the only place you will see green AR15s is in a museum. The olive drab is dark enough that all B&W pics make them look like regular black rifles. The color used is not like "modern" OD. Its weird.

I just saw another pic of them and they looked much better- the handguards looked smooth without small ridges seen in early pics. Looks like I'll be picking one up soon.
