marty please read at the beginning of the thread.

    we're talking about 55gr in 1/7 twist barrel with m4 length 14.5 or 16in.

    just to satisfy your post...
I had an m16a1 govt profile pencil barrel 1/12 twist cut down to 11.5in. I can shoot and hit a 6in plate up to 200yards. and that's from a cut barrel that has been to war in NAM!

and I use Irons! m16a1 rear reciever and m16a1 front sight.

beat ya to it rob ;-)

FWIW, I about shat myself when I first started making the hits. It was on day 3 of a Randy Cain carbine class, and I had been shooting my 3x (or maybe 1.5x) Compact ACOG the whole class. I thought I'd be cute and drag out the SBR for day 3 since I thought we were done shooting from 200. Whoops!

I frankly half-assed the shots until I started getting hits after the second or third shot, and then just kept ringing the gong. Totally surprised myself, and eliminated any thoughts I had about 55 grain in 1:7s, the need for magnified optics to hit at 100+ yards, etc.

Lanceriley - I did read it. Just trying to quantify what just fine means to people using the 1/7 from specified configuration. The post from Rob_S is exactly what I was looking for.

    1/7

Part of the issue is the weight range of bullets that a given twist will spin stabilize.

For example, 1/12 twist barrels will not shoot heavy bullets well. They just don't spin them fast enough to stabilize them.

Part of the issue is the quality of the bullet.

For example, SMKs, or Hornady TAP, will be more accurate than ball.

yes. that's why I started the thread. I am getting a 1/7 barrel and I was wondering if I could still shoot my 55gr ammo

if you read the above thread my 1/12 11.5in can hit a 6x6in plate up to 200 yards. but I can't use the heavier bullet
