We're generally pretty spoiled as Americans. You're seeing the Military being used to protect our borders, they tend to need to do that sort of stuff domestically when you're being invaded.
We aren't being invaded by a foreign army capable of engaging us in combat, so the 'invasion, invasion' stuff is hyperbole.
I've always thought we should have more of a military presence at the borders, but this ad hoc 'get them moving, right away' stuff is going to cause problems. I believe that NG and Reserve forces should be rotated to border duty for a month, on a regular schedule once every couple years.
If we were serious we'd be using imminent domain to claim all lands one or two miles from the border and develop a buffer for the .mil to operate in.
Tehn again, if we were serious we'd be wide scale throwing anyone who employed an illegal in jail, but that would cost big business some money, and make everything more expensive for us peons.
