Fenix lights

I'm sure this has been talked about verbatim, but I'm looking for a good light to run on my duty belt. I've got the flashlight in the car that I grab, but I also want one on my belt. More is better, right? I've been eyeing the Streamlight Protac HL-X, but the Fenix TK 20 is tempting, also. I need rechargeable and the ablity to run batteries just in case. It seems like Surefire and Streamlight get all the buzz, but I want something that is going to be a good light.

I'm not a LEO, but I use flashlights pretty hard and often, so I'm with you to have a good light. I carry them and have them prepositioned all around the house and at least two lights in every vehicle I own.

I have a Fenix UC35 that's on my workbench. Great light and never failed me.

I have several different Streamlight Protac models, including the HL, and all have been excellent through hard use/abuse. My wife and daughters carry the Protac 2L (presents from me). A Protac HL sits in my nightstand next to my G17 w/ Surefire X300.

I will offer a couple low cost alternatives for a secondary/tertiary light that I've been using for a year or so:

2. Thorfire Flashlights available from Amazon.com A cop on another board turned me on to these. He said he'd used them for several years and loved them. I have a couple including one I EDC and a second that sits on a window sill at the back door. These are freaking great lights: Here are a couple options for you:

I'm NOT saying Thorfire lights will replace my Streamlight Protac's, but they are proving to be excellent, reliable lights at very good value and have been extremely reliable through day-to-day use and abuse. They've been dropped, left out in the rain, fell off my moving truck roof, etc., and it's still going strong.

FWIW and full disclosure, every Streamlight product I've owned is still working except one, a Streamlight TLR-4, which Streamlight replaced at no cost-no questions asked, three times. The issue was the same on every one...the plastic rail always broke. The light never failed me. Kudos to Streamlight for great CS with this issue, which they told me was a common issue, but could do nothing for me except replace the light. I finally replaced it.

Thank you for the info. I currently have two 2L's and two 1L's. I also have the 1L-AA, but I'm disappointed in that light; it's more of a yellow light and the lower lumen 1L's wash it out easily.

I carry a 2L in my pocket, but want more lumens. I've been eyeing the 1000 lumen lights, but wondering if maybe a 600 lumen light that has a better actual throw and longer battery life might be the ticket. I use my light a LOT in my town and the rechargeable battery is almost a must versus having to change batteries on the daily.

I'll check out those other lights that you mentioned, too!

Another light you might want to check out is the Klarus XT11 line of lights or the XT12GT. They are rock solid and the tail cap dual switch user interface is imho the best there is.

I used a Fenix UC35 at work for about 1.5 years. It has a very irritating habit of stepping down to progressively lower levels of Illumination after running on high for about 30 seconds.

I put a drop in Malkoff lamp assembly in an old 6P and am much happier with it. You can purchase rechargeable batteries for these lights.

Malkoff also makes complete flashlights that are well worth the money.

No more Chinese stuff for me. Malkoff lights are built like tanks, simple but effective UI, are LEGO ready. They are tools that can be depended on, not gimmicky toys. Additionally Gene and Kathy Malkoff are awesome people to deal with and provide unmatched customer service.

this is my fenix pd20, it runs on a single cr123.

I believe I ha e carried this light for 8 years maybe a couple more. it's been through it all, I even lost it in my buddies yard then it snowed two feet and then he found it with his mower.....this thing is tough lol.

they discontinued it a while back, and they no longer make one with the same activation features. I'm going to go with a surefire edcl-1t when I upgrade. fenix makes a good light by my example of one. but until they make this same light with higher lumens I'll pass on the new stuff.

Here's another question:

Would a quality 600 lumen light be better than a 1000 lumen light that has been mentioned here? If a person did get a quality light that ran 600 for a true two hours with a great tint and throw, that seems like a better choice to me.

Do people get too wrapped up in lumens versus all the other factors that go into a good light? Or, as I've read other places, give me all the lumens and the rest doesn't matter?

Absolutely. 600 actual lumens is better than 1000 lumens for 20 seconds. I agree that the lumens ratings claimed by most manufacturers are total BS.
