I couldn't agree more. Fixed sights are always there, and tougher than any folding sight. I only run folding sights to make room for optics if needed.

I don't think I am. Since I have no use for carry handle uppers, I use flat tops, what am I going to do buy a carry handle bolt on? That going backwards. Also, I don't buy barrels with FSP's, so I'm not sure what I'm getting rid of. I can't get rid of something I never had. That's the beauty of the weapon platform. People can use carry handles and FSP's to their hearts content. I'll run mine the way I do because it gives me exactly what i need to keep pulling the trigger and it doesn't require me to stop pulling that trigger to flip up a sight, and pigeonhole me into compromising the adaptability of the weapon. If there were a perfect solution, I doubt this thread would be 8 pages long. All we can do is run what works for us. Bro, if that's carry handles and FSP's then rock it out.

I mitigate (in my mind) the lack of fixed irons with regular battery changes in the Aimpoints and flip backup sights. Even so, either could fail me.

Just like any single piece in your weapon could fail unexpectedly, or that factory new ammunition be the random over / undercharged round when you pull the trigger.

In the end, try as we may, it's impossible to get the probability of a weapon / optic failure during any single use to 0.00%.

Think out your requirements and engineer a solution that is acceptable to you, to include your rifle is out of the fight - what now?

Just a thought...once upon a time I had considered a set of offset front and rear sights in lieu of a fixed BUIS, but then you're adding weight and you have to train to pivot the rifle to use the irons, etc.

I just thought, in the end, "Folding BUIS...what a novel idea".

Rifle with an Aimpoint rds- yes
Rifle with a Steiner Px4i- no
Different rifles for different purposes and like others have said, cheap insurance.

Not every rifle I have with optics has buis. Some do some don't. Some have irons only.

Also if you have a high-end optic like Trijicon or Aimpoint, the probability of the optic failing is very very low.

I don’t have a BYU’s but I do have a peq 15 that I actually did zero. Chances that an aimpoint and peq both fail is so minimal that I’m okay with it
