I only own two rifles. One with a LPVO and one with a RDS. The RDS carbine has buis. The LPVO does not. With an etched reticle and 1x magnification I do not have to rely on battery power. Also without A QD mount I dont even see how I could use BUIS, without going to some janky flip too side set up. Honestly at HD ranges I have zero issues having a rifle with no sights at all. I have personally verified in a shoot house with sims whether or not 'reflexive' shooting works or not.

My HD rifle has irons and an Aimpoint.

Most of the others are either range toys, hunting rifles, or competition guns (or a combination of that) and generally have only an optic, or in one case only irons.

This is something that I don't think a lot of folks think about. In an HD situation, are you going to have time to flip up a rear BUIS? It would be even worse if you also had to deploy a front sight.

Fact is, with rudimentary practice, you can get good hits with the AR sans sights inside normal house distances.

If you think that is an issue at HD ranges the best option might be to go with a standard A2 front sight and a fixed rear sight such as the Troy Battle Sight with a lower third co-witness.

Yep, this is why I use an FSP-equipped rifle for my go-to. Even if my CompM4S dies, as long as I can see through the glass I can use the scope body as a giant ghost ring in combo with the FSP.

Last Friday I was testing a low cost RDS on a 308 AR-type rifle. I've used the red dot for a few previous range trips on a 5.56 AR without incident

After about 45 rounds into the test, the mount's locking bolt sheared off, and the optic fell off the rifle. What did I do?

I flipped up the BUIS and kept on shooting.

All of my ARs have iron sights of some type. Some are fixed, some are fixed carry handles and FSBs, and some fold.

I go BUIS-less on my SR-15 Mod 1 as it wears an ACOG TA-31, otherwise I have them on every other AR.

My rifles that should have them, have them. Those that don't wouldn't need them anyway, ever.

Aimpoint, some of the best optics around, and youre just going to leave us with "well they stopped working unexpectedly"?

Just out of curiosity, is this the new normal? Is it MOS specific or does line infantry follow this practice as well nowadays? I have been out for close to a decade now and it was SOP to zero irons and then simply lollipop the dot onto the front sight post, then confirm zero with that and qual. Unless you had an ACOG, of course.
