    I don't see the need for it for cosmetic reasons. For the 17L and 24, for a ported barrel (like the C-series Glocks), or for the older 34/35, I'm fine with it.

    It has been my experience with the M9 that it shoots rather clean. That is, the open top doesn't trap unburnt powder and other stuff after firing, it's just open so it gets thrown clear. Slide cuts are fine for a competition piece and I assume it's done for lightening the slide, reducing moving mass.
