I'd love to see a revival/update/simplification of that concept!! It seemed like such a great idea that unfortunately never made it past the proof of concept stage (and, also unfortunately, was introduced to combat before proof of concept was solidified).

Reading over the SOW it looks to me like they are looking for some type of caseless ammo SAW. It mentions desire to have ammo 20 percent lighter that brass ammo. David

Did they learn nothing from the G11 project? 20 percent lighter is meaningless when your squad support weapon fails from overheating or starts cooking off rounds unintentionally. Never mind the various overly complex ignition systems related to caseless ammo as discovered by Voere.

Textron claims to have addressed the weight issue with their case telescoped round, but the tradeoff (reportedly) is higher cost:

They are going to figure out the heavy ammo issue, right when robot ammo bearers come on line....
The Second Amendment ACKNOWLEDGES our right to own and bear arms that are in common use that can be used for lawful purposes. The arms can be restricted ONLY if subject to historical analogue from the founding era or is dangerous (unsafe) AND unusual.

    It's that simple.

The thing with telescoped rounds is that, while apparently it's a weight reduction, it looks like it's an increase in bulk. They look like small gauge shotgun rounds.
