Thumbs up The "Evil Roy" steel plate

I recently had a chance to shoot the portable "Evil Roy" steel plate made by Action Target, and will be buying one shortly.

at $120 with AR550 steel, it's an incredible value in shooting training tools. If you've ever had to lug 10x14" plates into and out of storage, you'll appreciate how compact and portable it is.

For you AK-74 enthusiasts and those of you aching to get a 5.45 upper for your AR, don't shoot 7N6 surplus ammo at it

I agree completely. The Evil Roy is the best value in steel out there. I bought three for work and they are holding up great. The only thing that comes close is an MGM Lolli-Popper because it will work with pistols, rifle, and shotguns.

Any idea how it does with .223/5.56 rounds? I normally shoot 55-grain FMJs.

Should be fine with AR550 as long as you don't shoot the legs.

I'd call Action Target to confirm.

    Question

What is the advantage of the AR 550 steel over the AR 500? What do you gain? Thanks.

AR550 is rated for centerfire rifle rounds. Action Target says to start at 100 yards and see if you get any dimpling of the target.

AR500 is handgun only. DO NOT SHOOT AR500 WITH RIFLES. DO NOT SHOOT ANY STEEL TARGET WITH STEEL CORE AMMUNITION SUCH AS 7N6, GREEN TIP .223, ETC.

6/8/10/12" circles available. 40% IPSC also available.

    Why not?

We've shot our gongs plenty of times with M855. It does less damage (pocking) to the Armor than M193.

    demigod,

The issue is not plate damage but the lack of fragmentation of the steel penetrator cores in the ammo which can do some unpredictable bounce off the plates and into your shooters and bystanders.

As mentioned, the steel cores will often do unpredicitable things when it hits the plate, but, it also pocks the steel. Those pock marks then cause the fragments of subsequent rounds, steel core or not, to have bad back splash issues and things such as chunks of the bullet jacket can come flying back at you. I've had a cut lip and a cut cheek from just such a thing.

This is incorrect. AR500 is fine for rifles, and is in fact what most rifle plates are made from. AR400 should really only be used with handguns, as it will pock more easily with rifle calibers.
