    AR and AK question

I know when you have a 14.5 mid length ar15 you can have issues with certain types of ammo so I was wondering is it the same with a 14.5 ak47? I was thinking about getting a krebs all and it’s a 14.5 pinned am.

The AKM pattern operating system, being a long stroke piston design, has much more gas vented into the gas block than a typical AR. As a result is far more tolerant of shortening the barrel than an AR-system. By AR operating principles, the AKM is considerably 'overgassed'.

My Arsenal with a 14.5" pinned barrel runs almost exclusively on Tula and Wolf, which to my understanding can be weaker loaded than most others (at least with .223). I've never had a stoppage in 4k rounds.

Only thing I'd caution against is using corrosive ammo (such as M67 Yugo surplus if its 7.62x39) because you won't be able to clean under the muzzle break with it permanently attached.

What 14.5 AR has issues with ammo?

There is no issue with 14.5” midlengths, from a decent brand. Just like carbine gas guns, it just has to be built correctly.

A 14.5” barrel is practically begging for a midlength gas system, unless you care about bayonets. It’s pretty close to optimum.

As mentioned earlier, AK’s have monstrous gas ports. As long as you don’t live in Siberia, it’ll probably be fine.

Edit: since the gun was built with a 14.5” barrel as opposed to a chop job, you probably won’t have a problem, even if you do live in Siberia.

The issue with 14.5 middies that I've dealt with was the end of the gas tube wearing down and leaking gas out of the key. I think there was an issue with some middy tubes.

After replacing them, the gun went back to 100% reliability.
