I'm curious as to how the AUG made that list considering it hasn't been adopted by any major military in years and most countries that use it as their primary rifle don't issue it to their SOF, who generally use an M4 or 416 variant.

I still don't know how the 416 would fair in the same extreme environmental tests that failed the other manufacturers AR18 hybrids as mentioned in the original article. I have a feeling the results would be the same and this is all starting to reveal weaknesses in the underlying designs with these types of testing. I think the overall failures have more to do with clearances for debris than anything else though the piston might help in say an extremely cold environment requiring less lube to overcome carbon built up in the receiver.

Not a folding trigger guard, just one you can take apart and certainly not a standard feature on any issue M4 weapon.

I said perhaps the AUG as it is one of the few that has advantages that even let it be considered against the AR/M4 platform. But really who is going to adopt it? Are the Germans going to ditch an HK weapon to buy from Austria? The Russians? The Americans?

The Ultimax 100 is an excellent LMG, but despite being a excellent LMG most countries aren't going to ditch what is already working for them just because somebody said "Hey look...shiny new weapon."

While I didn't read through this entire thread, is the Turkish entry their HK416 clone?

I believe it was the 7.62NATO 417 version, the MKE MPT-76.

Magazines have always been plentiful and cheap. Plenty of options for safeties if the stock one doesn't work for someone. I don't have an issue with AK sights in their role as backup iron sights. I run optics on everything.
    This is rank apologism.

An ultimak gasblock rail and the cantilever side mount are work arounds. They are not a continuous top rail. An ultimak does not allow you to adjust eye relief, and a side mount is a poor alternative for a precision optic (provided you can actually mount one and get eye relief for it) as compared to a solid top rail.

An AK can be adapted to modern optics and LAMs. An M4 is ready, out of the box.

So you've run AK's with side mount optics or rails for optics? I have, they work just fine. My standard Colt AR's and 5.56 AK's shoot the same overall.

Just because one can build an AK out of a shovel doesn’t make it superior

You have modified/upgraded AK variants, that shoot as well as a stock Colt... but AK is best, right?

    Edit:
I was over on LF and ran into a post by Pat Rogers stating that an Alaskan cop killed a polar bear with an M16. I thought that was interesting since M16’s don’t work in the cold, at least on this thread. <redacted>
