I was over on LF and ran into a post by Pat Rogers stating that an Alaskan cop killed a polar bear with an M16. I thought that was interesting since M16’s don’t work in the cold, at least on this thread. Maybe I’ll tell Pat that it simply cannot be.
Well, Pat is deceased so that probably won’t work.

In 5.56NATO have Colt AR's, Arsenal 106's/SA-M5's, and some Steyr AUG's. My AR's are all mil spec configurations- nothing aftermarket.

As far as cold weather, the article below is older. The test shows there are more reliable firearms suitable for certain environments. I've been wanting this same test conducted again just to see if the findings still hold true. Which is why we should always continue to develop more reliable firearms.

I have always thought that debris clearance is the main reason why the AK generally excels at these types of tests.

I think the overall failures have more to do with clearances for debris than anything else though the piston might help in say an extremely cold environment requiring less lube to overcome carbon built up in the receiver.

Don't see how a side mount is poor. It's solid and in the same place.

This whole thing is retarded. Each rifle has it's individual plus/negatives. But neither is that far apart as people make it seem to be ..... unless you're hung up on some insignificant thing

An ultimak gasblock rail and the cantilever side mount are work arounds. They are not a continuous top rail. An ultimak does not allow you to adjust eye relief, and a side mount is a poor alternative for a precision optic (provided you can actually mount one and get eye relief for it) as compared to a solid top rail.

An AK can be adapted to modern optics and LAMs. An M4 is ready, out of the box.

Yeah, it was from 2012. I’ll redact my post, because re-reading it I come off a little extra poopy.

I can get behind that. I’ve said before that, if you give a Ranger Battalion or Infantry Marine Battalion AK74’s and a few months to work with them, the outcome of battle would not likely be different. SOF Truth #1: Humans are more important than hardware.

However, to say that the Kalashnikov is BETTER, because you can chuck it off an overpass, or bury it in gloop, or put a PB&J under the top cover, or that the M4 doesn’t work, is just ....silly. And I am not confident that this “trial” was conducted objectively and without bias.

It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.

    Chuck, we miss ya man.

Agreed 100000%. PB&J in the action and nose dives out of 747s are not true test nor does one test say anything about the history of the firearm

Isn't that exactly what it is? It has a built in detent just for the ability to fold it down.

Actually it is, and yes it's on every M4/M16 ever issued- takes a bullet tip to activate
