    American Sig 551 NIB?

I know this is American made but aren't they limited in number? Why did this sell that cheaply?

    ETA
I'd like to buy one but there doesn't seem to be that many out there. What am I missing?

That’s a US made 551a1. They are based on the Exeter made 556. They are not really rare. They are technically limited in number because Exeter stopped production. They are not anything close to a Swiss made 55x. And $1800 is rather high for a 551a1.

The 556 series was Exeter’s go at making a domestic SIG 551. The upper receiver and barrel are not interchangeable with Swiss upper and barrel, as the US guns have a different thread pitch at the barrel-receiver interface. Cross compatible parts between the US 556 and Swiss 551 include bolt group, piston, cocking handle, gas tube, gas valve, lower, stock, fire control group, and handguard.

The 556 Classic and 551a1 are not terrible rifles IF you can ensure the one you’re buying is free of the many known QC/QA issues that surfaced over various runs of 556 production. Issues include canted upper receivers, improperly welded gas tubes, improperly drill gas ports in the gas valve, incorrectly machined trunions that caused peening of the carrier, poor welds on the receiver to name a few.

These issues seem to have been resolved by the time the 551a1 debuted and the 551a1 seems to be a good rifle.

    At $1800+ I would pass.

My pleasure. Not sure what your budget is, but JDI is the current SwissArms importer and you can order a 553 to your exact specifications:
    - Short or long barrel
    - 1:10 (553-1) or 1:7 twist (553-2)
    - Welded optic rail with flip-up emergency sights or diopter sights
    - Black or gray finish
    - Steel or aluminum lower
    - Black or green furniture
    - Standard 2-pos gas valve or 4-pos suppressor capable gas valve

Starting at $3250 delivered to your ffl.

Yep, I think it was CDNN who blew them out by the ton about a year ago. If memory serves they are like $1200 NIB.

They aren't. These are US SIGs dressed up to look like Swiss SIGs.

+1, though I don't think they ever resolved the issue with the holes in the gas valve being incorrectly sized. I have a Sig 556 Classic and a Sig 556 Classic SBR. Both run great other than being overgassed. I'm going to solve that though. I've purchased some extra new old stock gas valves which I will weld up and redrill. Oddly enough, the gas valves were made in Israel.

It's all about the quality of manufacture. The design is a little dated, but I'd say it's like holding a fine Swiss watch. The quality is evident, but you pay.

Yeah, the Swiss imports are way out of my price range right now. That's why the 551a1 got my attention. But for a USA made clone, I'll pass. MAC posted a review and went over some QC and other small issues I could see bothering me.
