Sig 556 xi swat

Is this a good rifle? Theres one at a local pawn shop for 900, thinking about getting it just to collect and run in local 2 gun matches for historic fun. Is it worth getting/a well built worthy rifle or was the 556xi a pos and not worth having?

556 in any variant is crap. A real 550 series is going to run $3k or close to that.

That $900 would be better spent on anything else.

I had a sig 556 swat before i knew better... my favorite crappy feature on it was the phillips head screws on the rail falling out randomly

Tell us what you really think! I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. Sig had some pretty major QC problems with the 556 series when they started out. Over time they ironed out most of the issues, but they never got to the point that you could be 100% sure a rifle you bought would run 100%. I purchased a Sig 556 Classic and it runs 100% and has never had a single issue. My only complaints are that it's overgassed and front heavy (just like the Swiss built rifles), so I bought a Sig 556 Classic SBR. Like the other, it runs 100%. If I had to pick a favorite to shoot rifle out of all those I own, I'd say it's the one. I like it so much in fact that I'm not going to purchase a Swiss made 553 pistol in 5.56x45 to SBR even though I could if I wanted to. I actually prefer that the 556 series of rifles take AR15 magazines. One thing to keep in mind about my viewpoint is that I'm a collector and range shooter. I honestly like most rifles so long as they're reliable. If I was going to bet my life on a gun, I wouldn't buy a 556. I'd likely just get a Colt for $800 or so. At the same time, I wouldn't buy a Swiss built 55X series either for the same roll. They are reliable and you can bet your life on them, but spare parts will be an issue at some point. That's just not going to happen with AR15's. My recommendation is that if you're not using it for a mission and simply trying to add diversify your collection, buy it under the condition you can return it within a certain period of time (week or so) if it's not reliable. The seller shouldn't have a problem with this and the odds are that it will be good to go, but you don't want to get stuck with one of the lemons.

I had a few of the SIG 556 rifles, two of them ended up being replaced by the factory, none really ran right and they weren't that accurate.

All piston rifles are front heavy to a degree, but my Swiss rifles really aren't noticeable. More importantly mine aren't overgassed at all. But probably the biggest difference is performance and accuracy, and I don't mean "always fires" or any lowbar standard like that.

The WCA 551s were probably the best built 556 pretending to be a 550 series ever offered and mine had lots of problems. The mount on sights were a joke, the rail screwed into a stamped receiver was a joke, the barrel and non standardized gas regulator were jokes.
