I'm a Colt Guy. I want a Colt AR15 Pistol. I want to remain a Law Abiding Citizen.
Q. I have seen Colt AR15 Fully Assembled Lowers for sale from various venues that have the Carbine Receiver Extension staked on and sometimes even with the Colt M4 Stock attached. These are confirmed by Colt to never have been built, or ever assembled, as a Carbine, or Rifle (even though some are still marked M4Carbine on the Lower). Can I buy one of these and receive it from my FFL as an "Other" on my Form 4473 and then take off the Stock (if it even comes with one in the first place) and then "build" it into a Pistol by FIRST putting on a Pistol Brace & only THEN pinning on a 6933 Upper Receiver.
I have researched that merely having a Carbine Receiver Extension or even a stock does not make the "Gun" a Carbine, or Rifle as long as it was assembled as a Pistol first and what constitutes a Pistol is the Brace being attached. And further, that one can go back to a Carbine Config if you want & then back to a Pistol if desired-just not the other way around, i.e., you can't ever go Carbine, or Rifle to a Pistol.
I would think it prudent to maintain a Copy of the 4473 that says Other and maybe even take a picture of the Lower Assembly with a brace installed as proof.
I already have to keep Paperwork for my NFA Items anyway, so I'm used to having to keep Paperwork.
