We see the same thing happening with current climate changes ("Global Warming"). Only animals in the polar regions are in danger of extinction from "global warming" as those from tropical and temperate regions are shifting or extending their ranges towards the poles.
If we consider various supposedly TEOTWAWKI future scenarios, some such scenarios represent the likely extinction of humanity while other scenarios would impact large parts of humanity but not others. Consider the effects of something like a cataclysmic asteroid impact which might be the end of humanity by making the Earth unsurvivable for humans. Compare that to the effects of a truly massive Coronal Mass Ejection at or above the level of the Carrington Event. Such a CME could cause a global EMP that would destroy civilization as you and I know it, with the primary, secondary, and tertiary effects wiping out most of the "civilized" world -- but there are people who would not even notice it had occurred other than perhaps wondering about the aurora.
You are right that no one can fully prepare for TEOTWAWKI in any general sense - my comment was basically that people who think they are preparing for some specific boogeyman "TEOTWAWKI" level event are fooling themselves by not looking far enough into the future of their chosen event.
When the LGM occurred it was an ELE (extension level event) for many species; megafauna, probably some of the last remaining hominids, and something like 99% of the humans at that time. We barely squeezed by that one.
The Senate Committee on Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs published their findings in 2008 when they conducted a study of the effects of a GMD and or EMP on the US power grid. Their projections indicate 90% of US citizens would die within the first twelve months following the event from starvation, lack of water, and social disruption, i.e. TEOTWAWKI.
Life is precarious and we're spinning around non-stop upon our pale blue dot on a galactic billiards table full of black holes, pulsars, asteroids, GRB's, GMD's, CME's, comets, rogue planets, and God know's what else. We'll be long gone by then but eventually our sun will expend it's fuel and morph into a Red Giant consuming the Earth as it dies.
Yup, no one can truly be prepared for every eventuality.

Bovine flatulence and R-22 didn't extinct the dinosaurs. Climate change is a naturally occurring phenomenon where as global warming is fear porn to bring about a particular set of agendas by power players. We're seeing record ice accumulation in 2018 and the sea levels still haven't risen to Al Gore levels. The few climatologist that don't depend on grant money say we're heading for a cooling and possibly another mini ice age.
