Absolutely agree, but it is a good topic of conversation.

I've had both the phantom style and now the Blackout FS'er on my 10" SBR and it rings both way. A little louder with the Blackout but you learn to ignore it.

How far away can someone hear this? I found a youtube vid that said it captured the "ping", but I couldn't pick it out. FWIW, I have a constant ring in my ears due to tinnitus, so maybe that is why I couldn't hear it...

At the Vickers 2008 M4C mods/staff class persons 8 people down the line could hear it ringing even with the can mounted. Approx. 40-50ft away.

I'm no IE or "operator", but isn't that mostly unacceptable?

Me either, mines just a pricey toy!
However if you have someone shooting at or near you 40-50ft away and you can't hear or see them (and they don't have a ringing flash hider)........I'd say your OODA loop is all F'd up.

Most sound suppressors won't completely eliminate the sound of a gun shot and very few are 'Hollywood quiet'. The quietest one I ever shot was a SPU .300Whisper can on a Rem 700. It was quiet enough that I could here the firing pin spring ringing just after the shot and heard the bullet hit the paper target and then the dirt berm (100yds away), I never heard anything from the muzzle.

The report of the shot is still a lot louder than the ringing of my Blackout on my 10" SBR. It rings for about 1 sec. or less after the shot.

No, as it is much quieter than action noise. Remember that a suppressed AR is over 130 dB and can be heard for a few hundred yards. A human conversation might be 70 dB and can be heard from 50 feet away.

Unless I'm trying to hear the pinging, I don't. I'm typically more focused on aiming and otherwise operating the rifle. I also always wear ear plugs when shooting. The combination of those two things probably makes the ping less noticable. About the only times I have noticed the ping were when playing with the mount when I first got it before it was installed, and when letting the bolt go forward on an empty chamber. When firing, the action noise and sonic crack are very noticiable....much moreso than the ping.

To me, the ping is not a big deal. I don't think you should let that be the deciding choice on which can you decide to purchase. Your percieved needs, cost point, and perceived customer service of the two companies should be more important I think. Between the Surefire and AAC, well, both are quality products. I don't think you would make a bad decision choosing either. My experience with AAC's customer service has always been very satisfactory.

    Unless I'm talking, then it's 100m...

Thanks guys, I think I understand the dynamics of what folks are trying to describe a lot better now...

Thank you for all of your input. I think I will end up going with an AAC model. Can anyone explain the difference between an M4-2000 and a 416-SD. Looking on AAC's website they appear identical in weight, length, diameter, and reduction. I think the markings may be different. Any help would be appreciated.
