    PDW Caliber Choice.

Wanted opinions on "in your opinion" what the best caliber is and why for a compact PDW style weapon. I'm talking something like an SBR or AR pistol type weapon, not a handgun. Tell me your caliber of choice and why.

    In the AR platform:

300BLK makes the most sense considering ballistics from 6-9" barrels, but the ammo cost is a negative.

556 can also be very compelling in 9"-11.5" lengths with the most favorable ammo costs.

6.8 SPC also works very well, but is more costly in several aspects.

Close range against one or two BG's or dogs? 12 guage SBS.

Semi-auto but still short? Tavor 5.56 16 inch or AUG 16 inch 5.56.

    AR type? .300 blk.

Really short and more affordable ammo? A pistol with a stock, arm brace, or cheek rest. Or PCC SBR in 9mm, .45, or 10mm.

If your willing to drop in caliber further, Vz-61.

I'm a believer that 11.5" and above is 5.56 territory. Anything under is .300blk with proper ammo selection. And by proper ammo selection, I mean 110gr Barnes Blacktips.

Agreed, .300 BLK seems to be the best choice, if only ammo prices would come down.

If they haven't come down in the last little while I don't think it's going any lower.

What keeps from getting into it is the cost of ammo and that Beretta has never released a .300 BLK barrel for the ARX100.

I've bought a bit of .44 special lately and I really don't want another forty-five cents a round caliber! (And that's for the "cheap" stuff)

I've got a 5.56 SBR that is nearly identical to my .300blk. I built it specifically so I can practice with 5.56 and save the expensive .300blk Blacktips for "social" use. Of course, the 11.3" has now turned into one of my favorite rifles too.

They have almost as much blast as a shorty 5.56. And they don't run as well. Even worse than 5.56 ar pistols. They are more prone to broken bolts, feeding and extraction problems.

I would have liked to have tried the more affordable brass case ammo available now hack when I had mine. But I'm sure it never would have ran well enough for me.

I recommend 20 rd. AR specific magazines and brass-cased ammo. But if your going to use quality 50 cents a round ammo you may as well be shooting .300 blk. And use standard AR mags.

Or......since platform wasn't mentioned, only caliber.... simply use it in an AK. Far less chance of broken bolts, or feeding issues
