Hey guys, I have a guy who wants to sell me a couple of cases of the red army standard 69gr 5.45x39 for .15 cents a round. I’m tempted because of the price but I’ve heard hard pass on the 69gr stuff. What is your guy’s thoughts about it? It’d be fired through a slr104fr.

Runs fine in my Saiga. I haven’t chronoe’d it yet, though. I pulled some and found that it is not (as reported on the internet) a tracer jacket. The bullet is visually and dimensionally identical to 7n6.

Its the same length as 7n6, so it should stabilize just fine. I haven’t tested it for accurcy, but no keyholes.

My AR upper hates 69 gr. Wolf, but it is a 1/9 twist.

I looked on SGAmmo's website because I remembered that they sell Red Army Standard. However, it's not 69gr. Interestingly, they're only offering one load over 60gr. That's a Wolf 69gr offering. A review of the Wolf load says "works great in my SGL-31 and SLR-104FR, Doesn't keyhole targets at 100 yards in my SLR-104UR SBR either which was surprising for its extra weight bullet." I'd say you offer is worth taking him up on. BTW, does the seller still have 5.45x39 rifles? If he does, then I'd suspect he doesn't like the ammo for a reason as selling for so much less than the current market wouldn't be logical. On the other hand, if he no longer owns a 5.45x39 rifle, then that would be a good reason for selling which would not indicate anything bad regarding the ammo.

I took a few boxes to the range today and it’s surprisingly accurate. At 50 yards it was a ragged cloverleaf. I didn’t notice any keyholing either.

There's something important to note regarding the Red Army Standard line of ammunition. The name is owned by Century. This means that they can have any factory capable of producing the particular cartridge manufacture it under their Red Army Standard name. Given that it's likely to be produced in different factories, I wouldn't make any assumptions regarding quality based on experience with previous Red Army Standard loads.
I suspect that the 59gr FMJ Red Army Standard that I purchased is the same thing as Golden Tiger. Both are made in the same factory and have the same looking primer sealant.
