75 gr Speer gold dot info

I am thinking about transitions my go to ammo to this round. My rifles consist of a 20 inch barrel AR and 2 16 inch Barreled ARs.

From what I can tell from research the 20 inch barrel launches this bullet around 2700 FPS give or take. Any chrono data on this round out of a 16 inch barrel? Also, I have not been able to find any information on what the minimum velocity is for proper expansion. I seen a YouTube video where it was shot out of a 10.5 barrel at 1850ish FPS and did not expand.

I like the 75 gr because it seems like it would have better light barrier penetration than the 64gr. I like the idea of having a round that can be used with better penetration on deer that can double a HD round (don’t have neighbors nearby). Seems like the round has potential to reach out to 250 - 300 yards and still maintain proper expansion under good conditions from 16-20 inch barrels. I am just trying to verify this to be the case.

Thank you for the pin as it holds the some information about velocity from a 16 inch barrel. I still can’t find any information in minimum velocity threshold for expansion on this round. There is data on the lighter bullets but I am having trouble finding information on the 85 gr gold dot.

I don't think that out of a 20" barrel you should have any terminal ballistic "failures". I have read about expansion failures from shorter barrels with the 75gr GD, but I don't recall what length. Obviously even with a 10-11" tube at 25 meters you might be okay but I'm talking about airing it out a little more than that.

From memory the expansion floor was 1600 FPS.

If the floor is down to the 1600s that would give 400 yards and farther when being launched of 16 inch barrel.

I saw a video on YouTube of failure to expand at 1850ish. Might be more of a range that it starts not consistently expanding? I read the lighter billets reliable expand at down to 1600fps. Either way out of a 16 inch tube it appears that this bullet should reliable expand at 250 yards, maybe further out. I am just trying to find a new round to stock deep that won’t break the bank. This seems like a good round for that. Good distance and reliable expansion combined with the ability to push through light to intermediate barriers.

Just HAD to put it sideways, didn't ya! Was that 2600-ish fps from the 16" barrel? If so that really isn't too bad for a .223 powered heavy-for-caliber load. I have the 64gr Gold Dots and they are not "weak" as compared to my 5.56NATO rounds. I surmise that while the Gold Dot AR loads are technically .223 and not 5.56NATO, they are stout for .223 ammo.

It was vertical on my iPad and then it posted sideways. I dunno.

But year. 2600 frombthr 16”. It was a little warm and the ammo might have been in the sun a bit before shooting. I was getting 3400 FPS on the BH 50 TSX. The 70gr GMX BH load was stupid hot. 2950ish from the 16”. And you could feel it. One of the few rounds I’ve ever noticed a real difference in recoil.
