Yessir... something like 90% of SMKs exited the torso of suspects shot by LE snipers during a study a few years ago (ASA, maybe?). It’s also more than the concern for backdrop as some people don’t have that worry. There is a big time lack of energy transfer when the round sails through. The chances of a “one shot stop” is greatly reduced when the round doesn’t mushroom and stay inside.

People.. we are talking 308! You are way over thinking it. Most 308’s are going straight through doing damage. 175 SMK to the chest and it’s lights out.

And lights out to the hostage/bystanders behind the target.

Even in .308!!!, a bullet that fails to expand or fragment does far less damage.

You don't have to believe me. Ask terminal ballistics experts. Or hunters. The fights over SMK use for hunting were EPIC. Because it is inconsistent in fragmenting but sometimes does, you end up with wildly different first hand accounts of performance.

"Dropped on the spot, significant damage to the vitals." Vs

"Took off running like it hadn't been hit, tracked a small blood trail for hours, small hole straight through." And they were both correct and honest about what they saw.

Why not just pick a load that always does the first?

Just because a bullet expands or fragments doesn't mean that it will stop in the intended target, far from it! If your looking for the perfect bullet for SD or hunting your going to be looking a long, long time. As far as SMK's they are not perfect nor is anything else.

I am discussing quantifiable bullet performance, not claiming nor chasing "perfection".

You can choose a bullet with consistent penetration that is very deep, very shallow, or in the 12" to 18" range. I say picking a load that may do any of the above is a poor choice.

I thought we were talking about HD. I didn’t realize it morphed into hunting.

A bullet that meets all the requirements for a good LE/Duty load is also good for SD/HD.

Why should you stop applying modern advances in bullet design because its a .308? Ballistic principals do not change just because you are going up in caliber.

No one is saying they're perfect. The role of the SMK is long range precision and it does that pretty well. But if you are talking typical SD/HD distances there are much better options. Pick the bullet that fits your requirements.

You have not offered anything but your feelings about .308!. Bad guys, gel, and deer all show the same thing, SMK has inconsistent terminal performance.

If you want to learn I recommend you google this:
Basic Wound Ballistic Terminal Performance Facts

If you just want to argue about your feelings you may want to pick a less technical sub forum.
