    Question (about lowers/future laws)

Ok, I couldn't find the Obama forum, so if you want to move it there that's ok. Anyway, a guy I know, was telling me that before the Clinton "assault weapons" ban went into effect, that he and his dad bought about 20 stripped lowers, for about $100 each. Then during the ban, they sold them privately and they went for about $1500 each. So my question would be, is this advisable, ie. legal. I assume it would be, as they're just private sales, granted I'm not going to pour tat much money into it, but I've considered picking up a few extra stripped lowers, when I order my assembled one. So I since I'm kinda new to the whole rifle arena, I was just checking with the experts....Thanks for the help,
    Jon

That quantity and the clear profit motivation might put them in the business of selling firearms, which they did without a license. It was illegal to build them into a configuration that constituted an "assault weapon." ATF's interpretation was that grandfathering applied to weapons that were functional and in the banned configuration prior to or at the time ban went effective.

Sounds like he was profitting by gouging fellow gun owners. And if He didn't have an FFL, he was illegally acting as a firearms dealer.

A scum bag either way in my book.

Yea, see I wasn't sure. I figured I'd pick them up to help fellow gun owners out, just to have them on hand, but I don't have an FFL, and wanted to see legally if it was a good idea. Thanks for explaining that a little. I knew the ban had the grandfather clause in it, permitting weapons already owned, didn't know what else it applied to. Looks like I won't be doing that...

Illegal ideas from the past AWB may or may not have anything to do with the next AWB.

Exactly. No one knows for sure what it may or may not be, until something is signed into law!

Stocking up on lowers may mean you have nothing more than a big pile of aluminum for the recycling bin...

lol...my thoughts exactly, that's one of the reasons I decided to get a second opinion. As much as I love AR's...I doubt I'd like to have 5 of them laying around

lol...idk, he was saying they just went to gun shows and stuff, but idk. Like I said, I wasn't too sure about the whole thing and figured it wasn't illegal but you'd need an FFL. Oh well, we'll see, Obama probably won't enact anything til later in his term, but I wanna start getting stuff now...you never know. I may just get 2 lowers, just to have another one for another build.

This is a capitalist country but anyone buying lowers or mags for the purpose of selling them for huge profits (gouging the new purchasers) should die in a fire. I view this the same as selling bottled water for $10-20 a bottle to victims of Hurricane Andrew or Katrina etc when you paid $1 for it.

FWIW purchasing firearms (this includes lowers) for the purpose of resale would make you an unlicensed dealer (bad juju with the ATF) private sale or not.
